Hi. I am trying to listen to an Overdrive protected audio file from a
local public library.

When I try opening the ODM file in Overdrive Media Console, for
delivery of the full media file, I get the error

Error 0xC00D2781: A problem has occurred in retrieving the Digital
Rights Management machine identification. Contact Microsoft Product
Support.

I get the same error (without the hex number) when I try, from OMC, to
get the "Security Upgrade" for WMP.

I am using XP Home on a Compaq Presario V5210us, WMP11, IE7 (but with
Mozilla 2.0.0.3 set as the default browser)

I didn't have any problem downloading a book using Adobe Reader 7. (I
don't care for the standalone flash-based reader which goes with Adobe
Reader 8.)

I found the solution with help from ODM support
1. Rename the DRM folder to DRM.old. It can be found at: C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\DRM

2. Close this window and open OverDrive Media Console.

3. Go to "Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade". If it will
not run from the OverDrive Media Console, the security upgrade may
also
be run by going to (in Internet Explorer only) the following site:
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite (Please make sure to
have
Javascript and ActiveX enabled as well.)

Hi,
Finally an anwer to my DRM problems with Rhapsody - though in an unlikely
corner of the of this forum (Fingers Crossed!).
(The solution http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp).
and NOT http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/crlupdate/en which also popped
up wnenever the DRM error message appeared.
-->the Upgrade button never worked. Soo thanks prash and ODM (And Microsoft
for the fix - though I think this should replace the second one above

I'm having the same problem--error code 0xC0002781. I tried following
Prash's instructions, but can't find a folder in Documents and Settings
labeled DRM. I've downloaded the Overdrive Media Console program and the
Windows Media Player 11, but haven't been able to use the program
because I run into the error code and the non-functioning "upgrade"
button every time I try to do the security upgrade.

I have tried everything that Overdrive has suggested and still no luck. My
computer won't let me change the name of the DRM fil - says it's protected
and Overdrive just keeps telling me to do that and tries to give me different
ways to get it changed. I've tried going through the links others have
shared on here and never get the "upgrade complete" button to fill in. It
says it is completed but it never fully completes.
I have several books waiting for me and I can't download them!
Any other ideas out there?

You need to go to *Windows Explorer *and under *Tools* you need to go to
*Folder Options *and select *View All Files and Folders*. Then you will
be able to find the folder you are looking for. It's a hidden file.
This worked perfect for me.

When I go to any of the websites listed below, the "Upgrade" button is grayed
out and doesn't work. How can I get it to work? Like the very first poster,
I am trying to install overdrive media and can't get past the first step of
upgrading the security components of WMP 11.0. I also do not have a DRM
folder, so I can't do that part of the solution. Help!

Step by Step… Here we go…

1. Open *Windows Explorer*
2. Select *Tools*
3. Select *Folder Options*
4. Select the *View* tab
5. Select *Show hidden files and folders*
6. Select *Apply* then *OK*
7. Go to *My Computer* (still in *Windows Explorer*)
8. Go to *C:\Documents and Settings\All Users*

Here you should now see the *DRM* folder from here on follow the
instructions as told before. Change the file name to *DRM.old* and
rerun *Windows Media Player Security Upgrade* in the *OverDrive Media
Console*.

I don't have the DRM folder under All Users. It's my work computer and there
are dozens of folders with DRM as part of the name. The upgrade button is
grayed out for me too. If I do not use IE or/and do not allow scripts, and
both are
necesary for this operation, how do I allow IE and scripts? Thank you.

I had to go to 'Tools' > 'Manage Add-ons' > 'Enable or Disable Add-ons'
and enable the add-ons. I'm not sure which ones you need, but I just
enabled them all. Then it worked for me. It installed and now I can
download with OverDrive!

Thanks for that link!

Per Tony, I have tried this link
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp
and the *Upgrade* button is greyed out for me as well.

Per crystalbtrfly07, I've tried enabling all of the add-ons. All are
enabled. Still grey *Upgrade* button.

Per prash.nu, I've browsed to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users and
found no DRM folder.

Per dane2005, I've verified that the *Show hidden files and folders* has
been selected. Still no DRM folder.

I've searched for *drm* in *Documents and Settings* and found only
drmv2lic.bak in C:\Documents and Settings\deke13\My Documents\My
Music\License Backup. No help there.

So, is it my system? I'm running XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Media Player
11.

AHA! I found the problem. Not only do you need to follow the steps listed
by dane2005 (see below step 5a I added), but you also need to uncheck the
*Hide protected operating system files*.

Now you can find the DRM directory and rename it to DRM.old

Then, launch Overdrive, go to tools>Windows Media Player Security Upgrade,
and everything works fine.

____

Step by Step… Here we go…

1. Open *Windows Explorer*
2. Select *Tools*
3. Select *Folder Options*
4. Select the *View* tab

5. Select *Show hidden files and folders*
5a. Unselect *Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)*

6. Select *Apply* then *OK*
7. Go to *My Computer* (still in *Windows Explorer*)
8. Go to *C:\Documents and Settings\All Users*

Here you should now see the *DRM* folder from here on follow the
instructions as told before. Change the file name to *DRM.old* and
rerun *Windows Media Player Security Upgrade* in the *OverDrive Media
Console*.

You also found the common solution, that is - to post a question only
to find the answer 15 minutes later yourself ;-))

Good work, thanks for posting back

you might try
navigate to C:\documents and settings\all users
turn off hidden files and rename the folder DRM to DRM.old
use TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS/VIEW to show hidden files
(if you have music files etc. I'd guess they would lose their rights, I'd
guess you'll be able to go back and change it back to just DRM and restore
those settings.)
