(this is a better place for this post - sorry about the cross post)

For a while I was ripping my CDs using WMP 10 and when I put the CD into the
drive, WMP would display the track information (title, artist etc). It would
take a couple of seconds while it went out to the internet to get the
information. Then when I ripped selected tracks, they would be saved with the
correctly identifiying track information in the filename and folder location.

However this has stopeed happening. Now when I put a CD in the drive, the
Rip tab display shows the tracks with their times but has "Track1", "Track2"
etc for the title and no artist info.

On the Player tab of WMP options I have "Connect to the Internet" checked.

On the Library tab I have "Retrieve additional information from the
Internet" checked, and the "Only add missing information" radio button
selected.

On the Privacy tab I have "Display media information from the Internet"
checked and also "Update music files by retrieving media info from the
Internet" checked.

Sometime around when this stopped working I installed Norton Internet
Security with Personal Firewall turned on, however I have a rule which says
that the program "Microsoft Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe)" has the
Internet Access of "Permit All", and another rule which says that "Microsoft
Windows Media Player Configuration Utility" also has the Internet Access of
"Permit All".

Can anybody suggest why WMP has stopped automatically displaying the CD
track information for me?

Thanks.

I had the same problem as you. I don't have a firewall so windows cannot
blame this on firewall or thirdparty software. After crashing the media
player trying to update a track directly from the library list instead of the
Tool-Process media information now, it gave me the worst advise possible.
Download AGAIN windows media 10 stating "A new version is available" when I
have the most up to date version.

Well guess what? I downloaded media player 10 and installed it again
(specifying that media player is my default player for all media files) and
it works great now.

I don't know if the new installation changed a setting in my options or if
the new version as a fix npt available in a patch yet or if changing the
setting to use media player as default for all application. All I now is that
installing it again solved my problem.

Try it

Good luck (we need luck using a Microsoft product)
