I have (at least) one mp3 file that plays correctly on my entertainment
centre system (XP SP2), but not on my new office system (Vista Home Basic).

I've searched for the missing MICROSOFT MPEG-1 (50) codec, but to no avail,
not even on microsoft's site.

If anyone can point me towards finding and installing this codec, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

The error message follows:

You've encountered an error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media
Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio
or video portion of the file) because the Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec is not
installed on your computer.

The missing codec might be available to download from the Internet. To
search for the Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec, see WMPlugins.com.

It's supposed to be part of DirectX as far as I remember. So if you
updated to 9.0c DirectX (or refreshed it) does that help ?

The Vista system has DirectX 10, and I'm not going to roll back. Is there
any way I can find the codec files on my XP SP2 system, and copy them over to
the Vista system via my network?

Sorry ! I totally overlooked the mention of Vista

I'll have to think about that.

I am having the exact same problem on my new vista system.

Old mp3 files that used to play, no longer work due to the missing
Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec.

WMP11 is supposed to download codecs automatically, but for some reason
it isnt downloading this one and I cannot find it anywhere on the web.

Any help on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

The MPEG1 codec has never been available from the codec servers. It's
always been an integrated part of DirectX. What changed before this broke?
Did you install any new multimedia or "codec pack" software?

Given your Vista context, there likely would not be a DirectX reinstall
method here.

What are the results of WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu?

Do other .mp3 or .mpg files work?

My mp3 library is contained on an external hard drive which I just
plugged into my brand new vista system.

All the mp3's worked and still work on my old xp system. And most of
them do on the new vista PC, but there are some older mp3's that just
will not play. Im not sure about other formats as I only play mp3 and
wmv movie files. All the movie files have been fine so far.

As the OP described, the help window that pops up when an unplayable
mp3 fails just directs me to the mirosoft wmp website and gives the
following info.

"You've encountered an error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media

I would suspect permissions problems. Try copying a few of the tracks to
your local hard drive. Do they play from there? Now copy those same files
back to the external hard drive, overwriting the originals. Do they play
from the external drive now?

Just tried your advice Dale, and still the same from my local

Its strange I can copy the files back onto another XP computer and they
work fine.

Still haven’t found the missing MPEG 1 (50) codec.

I am having a lot of trouble finding help on this problem. All links
seem to lead to something not relevant to the missing codec. I have
tried Cole2k.media codec pack v6.0.9 standard 32bit setup, but that did
not solve my problem. Also on zachd's advice I have checked the
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html website. But nothing appears relevant to
the problem.

On Dale’s advice, I have since tried playing a selection of video
file types and found that movie files with the mpeg extension crash my
machine, forcing it to restart.

My PC is brand new, about a week old, so nothing has changed, the
mp3's, and I assume the mpeg movie files have not worked since I got
the system.

Sorry zachd, I cannot find a site that allows me to host mp3's or movie
files.

I posted the results of the technical support information on the
previous page.

Have you contacted the computer manufacturer? They're obligated to support
your Windows installation and that includes Windows Media Player.
Unfortunately, you can't call Microsoft Product Support for any price and
get help since you bought your copy of Windows on a new PC.

Cheers Dale, I will try them.

Just found out that its not just mpeg videos, Its also wmv files that
crash the system. This is not consistent and only seems to occur after
the PC awakes from sleep mode and I try to play a video using WMP11.

If I restart the machine, and then play the same video file, its fine.

I know this sucks, but it's the only answer I have found. And Microsoft
seems unwilling to answer my emails. Just rename the mp3 extention to mp2
instead. I only had one file that I have found so far like this, and I am
in the same boat. Worked in XP Media Center and Pro editions, but won't
play here with WMP11 on Vista Ultimate. But, once I renamed the file to be
an mp2 extention, it plays just fine. It's gotta be something in the
headers which WMP11 doesn't like. Anyhow, give that a shot and see what
happens.

Hello,

probably another way of thinking to re-form the problem. Instead of
finding this MPEG-1 code for Vista, why not trying to convert this mp3 file
(MPEG-1) to another codec-layer that WMP11 speaks?, does anyone knows some
converter?

MPEG-1 and MP3 support are both present in Vista. Something may have been
added to the system that's knocked those offline, though.

What codecs and filters are listed in WMP's Help:About:Technical Support
Information menu tool?
