Hello,

Recently re-installed XP Pro after a bad MB. I am still using WMP 9 and I
get messages saying I need a "DX50" codec to play some files. Even though
these same file types
were listed when I installed the program.

Two questions.....

1/ Where do I get the DX50 codecs ( that are guaranteed to work ) :)

2/ Where in WMP 9 can I DESELECT some of the file types I chose when I first
ran it?

I can't seem to find that option anywhere in the program.

Thank you,

Tinsby

Installing FFDShow - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm -
will allow WMP to play DX50-encoded videos.

In WMP, press Ctrl+M and go to Tools - Options - File Types.

Tim,

Thanks for the info on the FFDshow, but when I go to TOOLS I don't see
any such option for FILE TYPES or preferences. Remember this is only
version 9...... ( I am afraid to upgrade it because of a bad
experience prior.)
all I see is DEVICES -PLUGINS-SECURITY

The help file says to use the " File types tab".... it's supposed to
be under TOOLS and OPTIONS but it isn't there.

Cheers,

I have checked with WMP 9 running on Windows 2000, and File Types was
present there. It should be there on XP as well. What version of Windows
are you running?

Also, are you sure that this is WMP 9? You can view WMP's version by
going to Help - About Windows Media Player.

For clarity, there's a screenshot of File Types at
http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/resources/bbciplayer/resources/WMP_ToolsFileTypes

Hi Tim,

Thanks for taking the time to reply again. I am using WinXP Pro SP3
and yes it is WMP 9.00.00.4503. Where your photo shows 12 tabs I only
have the 4 I mentioned.

I should also say that I am using an Asus Rampage Extreme MB with the
Creative Sound Max X-fi card and utilities in it. The soundcard is on
the UAA bus driver for HD audio. (KB888111)

Could it be that the Creative package is preventing me from seeing the
other 8 tabs? When I set up WMP I did not have the soundcard drivers
installed, I can't say that the 12 tabs were there or not, but I was
given a choice as to what files I wanted to open with WMP. I thought
(wrongly so) that I could go in anytime and change the file
associations.

If I can fix it fine, but it's nothing pressing. I have VLC Player and
the Creative one that has many features for sound control. For
instance my TREBLE and BASS are grayed out, but that's because I now
have a graphic equalizer to make those changes, of course that was
done by default with the Creative package.

It's possible that the Creative drivers are hiding the tabs, but not
very likely.

I have noticed that WMP doesn't show File Types if you aren't logged in
as an administrator. Is this the case? (you can check in Control Panel -
User Accounts)

Hi Tim,

Well sorry no good news here. I am the administrator of the machine
and even if I log on as admin in safe mode I still only have 4 tabs in
WMP.

I will offer that when I ran WMP in safe mode yesterday it offered me
various file types to choose from as it first did in normal mode.
Whilst in safe mode I deliberately unticked all the choices thinking
it would change things when I re-booted but no joy.

I am as puzzled as you are with this one.

Cheers,

Weird. I know that it's possible to hide some of the tabs through Group
Policies, but not File Types. Perhaps Zach or Neil can shed some light
on this?

While in safe mode, you probably saw the Welcome to WMP-wizard.
Fortunately, you can run this wizard manually too (in normal mode). Go
to Start - Run, copy/paste the following, and click OK:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe" /RunOnce

You should be able to change the file associations in the last step of
this wizard.

Hi Tim,

Thank you very much. That command line worked for me, at least I was
able to untick all the file assoications in WMP, which is what I was
trying to do all along.

Never thinking that there would be a problem, I foolishly had them all
marked......<sigh> now at least they are un-marked!

Puzzles me though why the tabs are missing, I can't say if they were
ever there or not. But this was a clean install of XP on a new HD.
Who'd install the OS and go right to WMP to see if the tabs are there?
Lol, It sure never occured to me to do that.

Maybe Neil or Zach will see the post and jump to our aid, YOU
certainly have done all you could to help me that's for sure and I
really appreciate it.

Do you think I need to make a post that uses Neil's name or Zach and
refer them to our postings or will they eventually find it?

You take care and many thanks, cheers and beers.

Hi, only me.

I'm not sure I recognise the symptoms you're describing, I don't
remember only devices/plugins/security being present and all other
Options tabs being hidden (over several years of problem reports on
the newsgroups). So, you're unique, congratulations ;-)

ZachD's site has lots of tips although they tend to be scattered about
a bit.

This section http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#deskband lists some
settings and user-interface bits that may become hidden.

The steps there involve going to the Start menu, choosing Run then in
the box, type

CMD

Press <enter> then copy and paste these 2 commands into it :

regsvr32.exe "c:\program files\windows media player\wmpband.dll"

regsvr32.exe "c:\windows\system32\wmp.dll"

Press <enter> after each one and expect to see "register server in wmp
succeeded". Those probably aren't right, but can't actually harm AFAIK

This section http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#networktab

lists problems more similar to yours, where the Networking tab in
Options is disabled or hidden. This sounds like a side effect of a
broken user account in windows,

So the actual step I'd try is to create a new User account in Control
Panel -> Users. Then login to that. Open WMP there, and see if the
problem is *only* related to your current user account.

If it is, migrate to the new user account and carry on as normal.

Out of interest, although this is a "fresh install of XP" - is there
any chance it's actually a PC cloned from a corporate PC's hard drive
- a direct copy which was then cleaned up a bit to remove some files ?

I'm just curious if (say) DriveImage might have copied a work PC's
configuration, and *that* PC was set to hide all these tabs with Group
Policy, since it seems unlikely to be a tool you'd be aware of to have
modified in the first place ;-)

HTH
Cheers - Neil

Hi Neil,

SUCCESS!

Both of the command lines you gave me succeded but the second one is
what brought back all the tabs! Hurray!!

Now to answer your question about the HD and the install. It was an
absolutely clean format and install of XP Pro on a new HD. There was
no image of any kind installed.

This machine gave me more trouble than I ever had with all the
machines I have built put together. Turns out the MB was bad and
wouldn't let me load the soundcard drivers. After over 15 hours on the
phone with tech support I finally sent the MB back to Asus and they
coudn't repair it so they sent another one.

This time the MB is fine and it loaded all the HD soundcard drivers
just fine. I made the mistake of activating Windows each time I
reformatted the HD before I got the replacement board. I was sure that
someone from MS would call me and say " What in the heck are you doing
out there?!!" But no one called and I activated it yet another time.

This build was absolutely sheer misery for me, way beyond where it
stopped being "fun" but it's working fine now and so is WMP. I have no
answer as to why it did what it did, I am trying not to fill up the HD
with extranenous stuff but we all know in the end it will need another
format at some point.

Windows 7 reminds me too much of Vista and I am happy with XP it runs
all the programs I have here just fine.

Now the burning question... if I wanted to upgrade WMP to v10 or 11 do
you think it's safe or shoudn't I kick a sleeping dog?

Thank you again Neil and Tim for taking your valuable time to help me
with such and odd problem.

Best regards or "73" as we amateur radio operators say.

Neil,

All the tabs work IE: They open a window below, all but the Network
Tab, that one just blinks when I click it and nothing else happens. Is
this normal?

Thanks,

Neil and Tim,

I got the tab back by using this line regsvr32
c:\windows\system32\wmnetmgr.dll

From Zach's page,

Thanks to all!!

Yeah, I was going to say that your player registration was messed up, but
Neil already pointed that out as well as how to fix it. =)

Hi Zach,

I have no cluse as to how it happended. Like I said earlier checking
WMP afeter I do an install is the furtherest thing from my mind. I
only discovered it when I decided to change file associations.

Almost makes me think that it was corrupted on the install disc but of
course MS never makes mistakes like that do they?

Thank you for a great page full of helpful info on WMP.

If you were me would you risk upgrading to version 10 or 11 or should
I let it alone since all the parts are there and working now?

Regards and thanks again,

If I had a registry capture of the state before, I might have been able to
guess. =)

> Almost makes me think that it was corrupted on the install disc but of
> course MS never makes mistakes like that do they?

No, a corrupt install on an install disc would be like the US Treasury
accidentally printing a $10,000 bill in a printing of $1 bills: impossible.
=)

Given the symptoms, it's more likely that you had some level of registry
corruption on your system, potentially caused by some sort of registry
"cleanup". I have no idea what that would have been- the smoking gun would
likely be the registry delta from the broken to fixed states.

Old versions of SatelliteTVforPC could have caused this badness, IIRC.

> Thank you for a great page full of helpful info on WMP.

Thanks! I'm sorry it's so hard to sift through. =\

> If you were me would you risk upgrading to version 10 or 11 or should
> I let it alone since all the parts are there and working now?

It's all up to what you like or enjoy. Upgrading to WMP10 or 11 originally
would likely also have fixed this. =)

Cheers,
-Zach
