When I play an avi file which is supposed to be a video with sound, I get
sound and no video. The avi file is stored in my external hard drive. The
file plays on other computers, with vista, just not mine.
This also occurs on avi files that I have burnt to disc, works well on other
computers but not on this one.
When I press play, the bottom right corner says "looking for codec" then
"found codec" then it starts playing sound but there is only a white screen
and a "musical note" insted of where the video should be.
Is there something i can download to fix this?
Thanks in advance
Rita
it seems, that your computer still misses a codec (needed to show the
video). I use WinXP, but also MediaPlayer 11. It also displays
"looking for codec" --> "codec found" but nothing happens. It seems,
that Microsoft did not manage to get this feature running correctly...
In order to play your video files, you should at first find out what
codec this file is using. For that purpose you should play that file
again. After the above described procedure of codec-looking, your
Media Player should display a red dot with a white cross next to the
file in the playlist. Now click on that dot and choose the second
option offered in the menu (more information about this failure?)
In the next message click on the right button (Help on the web?) and
you'll be redirected to a Microsoft page, which shows you the missing
codec (bold written on the page).
Hopefully, you can use my answer. I only have the german MediaPlayer
so I'm sorry, that I couldn't give you the right button or menu entry
names...

The missing codec is almost certainly DIVX.
Free download available from the maker here:
