I have a song which I accidentally ripped from a CD with the 'Copy protect
music' option on. I no longer have the CD from which the track originally
came, and was thinking to remove the DRM I could burn the track to a blank CD
and rip it again with the 'copy protect music' option off.

However, when I came to do this Media Player wouldn't burn the track to the
CD because it said I was missing the burn rights for that song. I checked out
the Media Usage Rights tab in the track's properties, and it turns out I
don't have the right to play, burn, sync, collaborative play the track or
back up the media usage rights.

The problem arises from me being able to play this song fine in WMP, over
and over again. How do I replace these missing media usage rights?

Unfortunately you're SOL if the CD is no longer available to re-rip
it. The rights cannot be removed (easily) and IMO this checkbox is an
accident waiting to happen for users.

So if users rip tracks like this, then update or replace their PC, the
tracks are unplayable because the license applies only to the machine
it was ripped on ;-(

If as you say you can Play the file (but not burn it) then you might
be able to use Audacity to record the analog playback from the sound
card, though it's a long shot.

Cheers - Neil

I figured a possible reason why the rights could be missing - Windows messed
up on my PC about six, maybe seven months ago, and I had to reinstall it. I
believe that whilst copying my files from the broken installation (which
would no longer boot) to the new installation, the copying of my License
Backup folder failed. At the time I ignored it, figuring the licenses were
for files that I no longer played (I'm an iPod owner, and iTunes is my
primary audio player), but now I realise that these 4 or 5 files that I don't
have on my iPod had licenses, which are now lost.

Thanks, I'll try and find audacity.

Bummer :-(

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and instructions for recording from
audio already playing through your sound card
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=recording&i=streaming

Notice that's going from digital (media file) to analog (audio
playback) and back to digital (a recorded media file of the analog
audio) so you may lose some quality along the way.

Same topic but different scenario: I transfer digital recordings (personal
use) from a voice recorder to my PC and the files are transferred as '.wav'.
When trying to burn the files to CD, I get an error, "...file has error or is
missing burn rights..." I've burn these files before so I don't know why
this error now, except maybe an earlier WMP version.

WAV files don't have burn rights issues.

Do they play correctly in WMP?
