Media player doesnt detect net connection

I just installed xp on my computer... I upgraded from win
98..

I have been having problems with my media player...it
does not detect my connection to the net..infact some
other programs tend to do that too .. one of them being
the online help system which is why I have to post this..

I am in college and I am on the campus network (broadband)
I am able to surf the net.. so i guess I am connected ..
this only happens with a few programs..

when i installed the necessary upgrades for xp .. it
worked for a little while (i.e when i went to the media
guide it detedcted my connection) but after restarting my
computer it when back to the old state.
