WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 (WMP11 FINAL) INSTALLATION FAILS.
12/04/2006

PROBLEM:
Installing Windows Media Player 11 - Final (WMP11) Crashes Computer -
Crash Is Always Severe (Computer Re-Starts) And Always Occurs At The
Very Same Final Steps Of The Installation Process - Computer Crashes
*After* The WMP11 Validation Phase And During The Very First WMP11
Launch While Apparent Final Downloads And A Final "Configuration"
Step Is Occurring.

Installation Strategies Have Included:
- Installing With The Usual Online Windows Update Procedure.
- Installing *After* Downloading The WMP11 SetUp File From The
Microsoft WebSite.
- Installing Using The Default "Express" Setup.
- Installing Using The "Custom" Setup (With Nothing Checked
Including The URGE Store Program Installation).

MY PRESENT SOLUTION:
RollBack To Previous WMP10 (After Numerous WMP11 Installation
Failures.)

QUESTIONS:
Has Anyone Else Had Similar WMP11 Installation Problems?

How Have Such Problems Been Solved?

Suggestions Welcome If Possible.

Thanks In Advance.
Dennis

NOTES:
My Basic Computer System Includes:
Windows XP Professional/IE6 - ASUS P4C800 Deluxe MotherBoard (Latest
AMI Bios v1019)/Intel Pentium-4 3.0gHz/2.0gb RAM/ATI Radeon 9800pro
128mb Video Card/Creative SB Audigy Sound Card. (All Updated Drivers
And Related, 12/04/2006.)

I had the very similar problem.
Install and reinstall inumerous times with several processes. Allways the
same as you.
On lunch of WMP 11, PC craches.
Only solution roolback to WMP 10, where there is no problem at all.

NO ONE, even Microsoft gave me a solution for that.

I also do not know what to do.

I install WMP in more 3 PC with very much similar constition, and there no
problme att all.

Sorry not to be able to help in this momento, but i keep your e-mail at hand
if I got a solution. Please use mine too, if you got one. (sp...@nqf.pt).

Hello Jose,

Thanks for your comments - I noticed your own post (see URL below)
about the problem *after* I posted my report - I too installed the
WMP11 program on other computers without any problems whatsoever - I'll
probably just wait until someone with more experience with all this
replies with some helpful suggestions (if possible) - I'm somewhat
stymied (but yet somewhat intrigued) by the WMP11 Installation Crash
problem at the moment.

Regards,
Dennis

What I feel strange about it, is that not so many people complain about this
very same problem, I think it might be some incompatibility problem.
Not so many reports about it.
I've tried again with a neu version of WMP11, and same problem occured.
Lunch WMP 11 and PC crashes imidiatlly!!!!

NOTHING MORE TO DO NOW !!!! BACK TO WMP 10 . This suks !!!!

Thanks again Jose,

Yes, I agree - the WMP11 Installation Crash problem seems
to be the result of some incompatibility between the WMP11
program and some Hardware Part or Software Program in
your Computer.

Just curious (and if possible) --

What are some of the specific Hardware Parts and Software
Programs on your Computer?

Regards,
Dennis

While I have the wmp 11 installed you just can't use it. if you try
to use it it crashes. It won't let me roll back to 10 either. when I
try that it agian crashes and reboots. I would hope microsoft will find
a cure for this soon. I tried to install over wmp 11 and I can't do
that it crashes.. I would love to be able to get back to 10 . The whole
media player is useless... rufusdog

Hello zachd [MSFT],

Thanks for your comment - there were NO
"crash bucket numbers" (or any other messages
whatsoever) with my hard crash experiences
in trying to install the WMP 11 program
(described in detail above).

Dennis

OK, if you don't get a crash bucket number
* rename the file c:\windows\wmsetup.log
* set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer, value name
"SetupLogLevel", value type REG_DWORD to value "ffff" (or some other high
number
* rerun the setup uninstall the computer restarts

What are the last 20 lines of c:\windows\wmsetup.log at this point ? That
should indicate what is causing the restart.

-Zach

Hello zachd [MSFT],

Before performing your suggestions, the
last lines in my current WMSETUP.LOG

current log lines give you an idea for my
earlier WMP 11 install crashes?

OK, now rename that file (wmsetup.log).

Download WMP11 directly from
http://windowsmedia.com/download
-- you're running the AutoUpdate version, which has unnecessary wrinkles.
Now follow these steps again - if it again reboots, post the last 50-100
lines from wmsetup.log . That should be more illuminative.

Hello zachd [MSFT],

Tried your WMP 11 Installation suggestions:

HARD CRASH resulted again *exactly* as
described earlier above.

Latest Installation Details include:
1. Used new Download of WMP 11 from
http://windowsmedia.com/download
2. Renamed "WMSETUP.LOG" to "WMSETUP.LOG"
[hope I understood your suggestion here ok]
3. There was no "Setup Loglevel" in the Registry.
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer)
4. There were NO Crash Numbers or Messages associated
with the latest Hard Crash.
5. There were few running programs during installation.
(including no AntiVirus/Firewalls or related programs)
6. WMP 11 Installation was "Custom" with "all file types"
(including mpg) selected; no URGE was to be installed.

As suggested, the last 50-100 line from the WMSETUP.LOG
File is copied below. Hopefully these lines might help provide
some idea for the installation Hard Crashes.

I'm presently Rolling back to the older WMP 10 installation.

Thanks again for your recent help with all this.

Regards,
Dennis

According to this, WMP11 is installed and you should be able to run
wmplayer.exe (WMP) directly at this point.

If you're still hitting an error now, that doesn't appear to be an error in
installation but rather something likely driver based. If you get a blue
screen, there may be juicy details there. If you do not get a blue screen,
that's sadder. I would suggest turning video hardware acceleration all the
way off as a first test.

Hello zachd [MSFT],

Decided to re-install the WMP 11 and then
try to launch WMP after the usual Hard
Crash and restart.

After the re-install, hard crash and restart, I
Launched the WMP 11 from the Quick Start
Tray (incidently, right-clicking the WMP Quick Tray
Icon and choosing Properties revealed the
following in the Target window:
"C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1

After launching WMP 11, the WMP 11 Welcome
Screen came on and required a re-install (??).

Again I chose "custom" and accepted all defaults/no
URGE, then clicked the "Finish" button. My ZoneZlarm
firewall noted permission to access from setup_wm.exe
for 127.0.0.1:Port 9100. I "allowed" this (always).

After clicking the "Finish" button, a screen ("migrating the
windows media library") flashed on and afterwards, the
usual instant hard crash and computer restart.

After the computer restarted, I tried to launch again for
a SECOND go-round. Again the WMP 11 Welcome
screen came on for a re-install (??)

Again I chose "custom" and accepted all defaults/no
URGE, then clicked the "Finish" button. My ZoneZlarm
firewall noted permission to access from wmplayer.exe
for 127.0.0.1:Port 1128. I "allowed" this (always).

ALSO, this time there was an ERROR message as follows:
ERROR: WMP encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
More information:
ERROR Signature:
Event Type: BEX P1:wmplayer.exe P2:11.0.5721.5145 P3:4537112a

Also,
C:\Docume~1\DINNIS~1.BOG\LOCALS\temp\werbd2c.dir00\wmplayer.exe.mdmp
C:\Docume~1\DINNIS~1.BOG\LOCALS\temp\werbd2c.dir00\appcompat.txt

After closing the ERROR message window, the usual instant hard
crash and computer restart.

After the computer restarted, I tried to launch again
for a THIRD go-round. Again the WMP 11 Welcome
screen came on for a re-install (??) Again I chose
"custom" and accepted all defaults/no URGE, then
clicked the "Finish" button.

After clicking the "Finish" button, a screen ("migrating the
windows media library") flashed on and afterwards, the
usual instant hard crash and computer restart.

I then turned off all video accelerations (Desktop ->
Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot
(from "Full" to "None").

I tried to launch again for a FOURTH go-round. Again the
WMP 11 Welcome screen came on for a re-install (??)
Again I chose "custom" and accepted all defaults/no URGE, then
clicked the "Finish" button.

After clicking the "Finish" button, a screen ("migrating the
windows media library") flashed on and afterwards, the
usual instant hard crash and computer restart.

After all this, I copied my latest WMSETUP.LOG file
Lines - these Lines are copied below.

Perhaps the above informations will provide some
idea of my present WMP 11 program problems - any
other suggestions or work-arounds would be appreciated.

I'm presently Rolling back to the older WMP 10 installation.

Thanks again for your recent help with all this.

Regards,
Dennis

You're getting a little bogged down here - set
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences
value name "AcceptedPrivacyStatement" to 0x1. (Reset that after everything
works perfectly.)

That's not a "reinstall" here - that's just the privacy/settings options
dialogs.

What's m5pmsp.dll? Do you have a memorystick? I suspect you meant
mspmsp.dll, and you have a memorystick device attached to the computer that
is causing WMP11 to blow up...

Hello zachd [MSFT],

Thanks for your reply.

YES, the file is named MSPMSP.DLL [seems I
have 7 instances of this file in Window subfolders
after a Search] - and YES, I have a memorystick
device attached to the Computer (specifically,
OLYMPUS Camedia USB Reader/Writer MAUSB-10
drive for my Olympus C-50 Digital Camera).

QUESTIONS:
Would you think that WMP 11 Installation (and Use)
is incompatible with this memorystick device?

Would I be able to set up WMP 11 if I simply
disconnect this USB memorystick device?

Will I be able to use this USB memorystick device
*after* WMP 11 is installed?

ALSO, Exactly how does one change the value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences
value name "AcceptedPrivacyStatement" to 0x1?

At the moment, my Current Settings are as follows:
MODIFY [1 hexadecimal]
MODIFY BINARY DATA [0000 01 00 00 00 hexadecimal]

In any case, thank you *very* much for all your help.
It's greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Dennis

Given what you've said, I would disconnect the memorystick. I bet WMP11
launches then.

There have been some cases where memorysticks can cause problems. I believe
that's being investigated. Actual product support may know more here.

I suspect that in your precise case, you would either need to disconnect the
memorystick when using WMP or roll back to WMP10. Since the crash is in
mspmsp.dll, if you want to use that freely, you'd likely need to rollback
Windows Media Player 11 *and* the Windows Media Format 11 Runtime and then I
suspect you'd not hit this crash.

The key, of course, is making sure that after you're rolled back that you
have the older version number for mspmsp.dll . Just check what you have
now, being the rollback process, and when you're done, you want an older
version number than you have now.

Hello zachd [MSFT]

Thank you *very* much for *all* your help with this.

Your recent comments are very well regarded.

I think I have enough information now to better
decide what to do (actually, I don't mind the old
WMP 10 program).

I should mention that I successfully (and easily)
installed WMP 11 on all three of our other computers -
none of these other computers are connected to any
memorystick devices whatsoever - such easy WMP 11
installations on computers without such devices seem
to be consistent with our recent experiences with a
computer that has such a device.

In any case, thank you once again. It's all *very* much
appreciated.

Best Regards,
Dennis

I'm glad to hear it - I may have a friend contact you to gather more
information here, if that's all right. It's certainly an interesting
issue - the more that can be done to straighten this out, the happier I am.

Do you have a memorystick on your system? That was the issue in question.
If you don't, you're hitting something different... =\

Does disconnecting that stop WMP from crashing... ?

If it's the same issue, it's a crash getting a name string from the
device... so memorystick / UDB card / whatever.

(updated - 02/16/2007)

Hello zachd [MSFT],

A POSSIBLE SOLUTION To The Problem Of A Failed
Windows Media Player 11 Final (WMP11) Installation
On A Computer System Containing A USB MemoryStick
Device Is Described Below.

I Updated the USB MemoryStick DEVICE DRIVER to the latest
available, DISCONNECTED the USB MemoryStick Device from
the PC System and INSTALLED the WMP11 Program ("custom"/
accepted all defaults/no URGE/"allowed" ZoneAlarm access to
wmplayer.exe two times from un-noted urls/ports). After a
seemingly successful WMP11 installation, I briefly tested the
WMP11 Program on several audio and video files and all
seemed ok - I then RE-CONNECTED the USB MemoryStick
Device to the PC System and re-booted the Computer. Afterwards,
I tested the newly installed WMP11 Program and *all* still seemed
to be working ok including the USB MemoryStick Device.

Hopefully this effort finally solves my WMP11 installation problem
- at least for me and my present PC System connected to a USB
MemoryStick Device.

Kind Regards for your recent help with this,
Dennis

PS --

DETAILS:

As noted in an earlier thread post above,
my specific MemoryStick Device is an OLYMPUS
Camedia USB Reader/Writer MAUSB-10 Drive for
my OLYMPUS C-50 Digital Camera. Apparently
a File (MSPMSP.DLL) related to the MemoryStick
Device is associated with a severe crash when
trying to install the WMP11 program.

My Basic Computer System Includes:

Windows XP Professional/IE6 - ASUS P4C800 Deluxe
MotherBoard (Latest AMI Bios v1019)/Intel Pentium-4
3.0gHz/2.0gb RAM/ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb Video
Card/Creative SB Audigy Sound Card. (All Updated
Drivers And Related, 12/04/2006.)

I have loaded wmp11 successfully but cannot work out how you save a
downloaded file. Where's the "Save Target As" box. I could on previous WMP
versions. 11 is just a pain and can see absolutely no benefit.

Save Target As is a feature of IE, not of WMP. Perhaps you mean the file
menu? Does pressing CONTROL-M (CTRL+M) get the File menu you want back?
