Hi,

I just got a new computer running Vista Basic & transfered all my music &
video from my old computer running XP. All files worked fine on my old
computer. The audio files work fine & so do some of the videos, but i get the
above error when i try to play some other files. The files are all of the
same thing, but in different formats, ie mpg/avi. The files that dont play
are around 200mb, and the files that do play are shorter, dunno if that has
any effect.

I also cant view xvid files on vista, but i think this may be because there
are no compatible vista codecs?

Hope someone can help.

Chris.

Home basic doesn't come with an MPEG2 decoder (DVD), so unless the
files are MPEG1 (video CD) then it won't play them till one is
installed.

I think Deccheck still works on Vista, so you could see if any DVD
decoders are installed using that :

Well DivX is MPEG4 video, same as XVid, so it should decode XVid just
as well : The Divx 6.6 codec was just released, which you can download
from http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

Hi,

I installed the divx codec & it works now, thanks!

I installed the other program & it came up with a list of 8 decoders, only 1
was compatible, "CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD7DX)" Version 6.0.0.3402,
but when i tried to set it as the preferred decoder it wouldnt let me, said i
needed to log on as administrator even though i was already logged on as
administrator...

nvm i just figured out the problem, i was trying to play files in a playlist
& the file location was different on the 2 different computers so it wouldnt
play on my new one! Although on my new computer i cant skip to different
parts of the video like i could on my old computer...
