When I try to play a file I get a message that I am missing codec Microsoft
GSM 6.10 (31). How do I get the missing codec?

Do you have msgsm32.acm? that is the Microsoft GSM 6.10 codec. On my system
(XPpro SP3) it is in c:\Windows\System32 folder. Version is 5.1.2600.

If you search for 'download msgsm32.acm', there are sites where you can
download but an earlier version in most of them.

My WMP11 has an option "Download codecs automatically" under "Automatic
updates" under "Player" in the options. Admittedly it is not selected,
and is disabled (greyed-out) so I can't select it, but that might be a
good choice for you, if you can get it to work.

The help had nothing to say about this checkbox; I was hoping it might
explain why mine is disabled.

Codec download has pretty much been gutted as an ongoing concern at this
point, so that likely will not do anything for anyone. =\
