Two devices have been assigned the same input/output (I/O) ports, the same
interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel (either by the BIOS, the
operating system, or a combination of the two). This error message can also
appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device (for
example, if a universal serial bus (USB) controller does not get an
interrupt from the BIOS because of a corrupt Multiprocessor System (MPS)
table).
You can use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable
the conflicting device.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
troubleshooting wizard.

If you've installed it several times yet it still does not show up, it would
be time to contact your sound card driver provider and ask for support. =\

Error 80040256 (No audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not
responding) and C00D11BA (Cannot play the file because there is a problem
with your sound device) along with most sound card related problems can be
fixed just reinstalling the drivers for the sound card. NOTE: If you are
having sound problems with *only* MP3's then please see
http://tinyurl.com/yunpf.

Windows Media Player uses DirectSound to interface with the sound card, so
sound very well might work in other applications and just not WMP. More
information and tips can be found at http://tinyurl.com/3455d.

If reinstalling the drivers doesn't fix the problem then the next step you
should try is updating/reinstalling DirectX. DirectX can be downloaded at
http://tinyurl.com/97jw.

If you need help locating where to get the latest drivers for your sound
card try the following. Your Device Manager in Windows "should" supply the
information assume the sound card has been detected. To access the Device
Manager right click on My Computer and select the Device Manager tab. In
Windows XP goto the Hardware Tab and select Device Manager.

If you don't know how to access the Device Manager or it doesn't show your
card, than the easiest thing to do is download a free utility like Belarc
Advisor. Run the installer then it will open a webpage for you. Under
Multimedia it will tell you the sound card or "Audio Controller" you have in
your PC. You may now goto that companies website and download the drivers
and reinstall them.

And if that doesn't help you will need to provide all the information you
can about your system in a reply in the newsgroup. http://tinyurl.com/2o4h9
will help you supply good information to your peer's to help you out.

Not all questions get answered, this is a peer support (i.e. you and
me) newsgroup, not actually staffed by any product support.

If you go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manger :

Can you see anything there listed as an actual sound device ?

Is there anything showing with an exclamation mark next to it, or
listed as disabled ?

And do you hear any system sounds at all (such as the windows startup
sound) ?

Niel,

Thank you for the reply. My device manger shows no sound device. The
windows startup sound is gone but sometimes on wrong commands or keystrokes
the computer 'beeps' just fine. I looked in System Information and the
Device History lists many media and sound devices as Removed on the 18th.
But I had listened to music and DVDs after that date. Is there any way to
get these devices back? downloads or updates? Also my computer no longer
recognizes my camera or jump drive when plugged in the USB?

All this began after the system was freezing on startup and I did a
Diagnostic Start up in msconfig and then download updates for the XP system.
The system restore won't let me go back enough days to clear all this. Any
suggestions are greatly appreciated!

OK well it really depends. Most systems ship with a CD containing a
range of software, which includes Driver software for running the
hardware included with the PC. If you have a CD supplied with the PC,
that's the first place to check.

The next would be any spec sheet detailing which sound card is inside
the PC. From that, you can identify the manufacturer (for example
Realtek, Creative and Sigmatel all make PC sound chips or cards)

Those manufacturers website would have a download for the specific
hardware driver, and some also have a configuration checking tool to
determine which device is installed.

Finally, if you have none of those, you can try the actual PC
manufacturers website for an online list of parts inside the PC, or
even crack the lid and take a look at where the speakers and mic plugs
are connected - there's usually some manfacturers make on the board.

Quite often windows update will identify the device drivers *if* it's
already installed partially.

The 'beeps' you hear at startup are from a separate little speaker on
the PC motherboard or in the case, that's literally just provided to
beep at startup and nothing else (so you can discount that device)

HTH
Cheers - Neil
