I have recently bought a pc...not very offay with it, and need some help....
I am trying to play a dvd, but keep getting an error message, telling me i
dont have the compatible device.
Windows Media player is installed, and allows me to run cd's etc, but the
dvd seems to need something different.
Any ideas???

Windows Media Player does not come with the ability to play DVDs - a plugin
or other commercial software is required. The plugin can be purchased at:
http://www.intervideo.com/products/custom/ms/windowsxp/media_pack.jsp

A cheaper alternative is to download and install the free VLC Media Player
from VideoLan. It is free and contains the necessary codecs for playing
DVDs, and it is small and compact too. Moreover, it is compatible with
Windows XP as well as Windows Vista. The only restriction is that Windows
Media Player will not pick up the codecs to enable it (WMP) to play DVDs;
you will need to use VLC exclusively to play your DVDs.

Yep! Go for the VLC Media Player. Look it up . It's FREE ! MS Media Player
sucks. One would think it can be used without having to bother with this
extra crap of getting Plug ins and the like. I was able to view Slide Shows
linked to the Wb Page on the MS Media Player. Now" For some reason unknown to
me, it wants to download the file and then play it. I did prefer the plug and
play link up with the Web Page. Why can't they keep things working as they
should?!

WMP11 does not come with the ability to play DVDs. A plugin can be purchased
from http://apps.corel.com/lp/xpacks/
