Hi Everyone,

Awhile back I installed the WMPTagSupportExtender.1.4.msi plug in so I
could have audio tag info (album, artist, etc.) for my vorbis / flac files in
WMP 11 , on my Win XP Pro OS.
But the plug in wouldn't auto read vorbis/flac files, but I could manually
edit the info in with WMP's edit function.
Yesterday I unchecked the WMPTagSupportExtender.1.4.msi plug in , and
installed the WMPTagSupport11.exe plug in to see if it would read tag info
better.
Now I would like to ask, if it could cause any problems having two
different audio tag plug In's installed in WMP 11 ?
And does anyone know which plug in would be best for vorbis/flac files in
WMP 11 ?
Thanks .

Hey leoliver. Morning.

I just downloaded a cd, (robert plant & alison krauss, raising sand), to my
music files, and I went to play them and wmp 11 didnt recognize the files,
and so they wouldnt play.
I checked out the extensions and saw that they were .flac files. I had no
idea it was a flac file when I dl-ed it.
So Im googling how to play flac in wmp 11 and I found a website, probably
sponsered, with some links to plugins to allow wmp to play flac files.

(check the website:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_flac_files.cfm
scroll down about 3/4's of the page, you'll see the info).

So, this is what it says, and this is what I'm supposed to download:

"It is totally possible to play FLAC files in Windows Media Player and
technically any DirectShow-based player. Before we look at Windows Media
Player directly, let's take a look at Media Player Classic because with
Windows Media Player we will also need to install a plug-in to read the FLAC
tags correctly.

The first thing we need is a DirectShow filter, and there is a perfectly
good one available from AfterDawn for download that will work called
Illiminable OGG Directshow Filter..."

...and then it has a link to download this Illiminable OGG filter.
The next thing it says I will have to download is, if Im not mistaken, the
very same filter, or plugin that your talking about in your post.
It says this, on the dl page:

"With Windows Media Player however, while you can now play the files, the
tag information (album info, artist info etc.) that is useful for the Media
Library won't actually work. However you can fix that with WMP Tag Support
Extender.

Download WMP Tag Support Extender from........"

So, one of these filters lets me (supposedly) play .flac files with my wmp
11. The other allows me to tag them, put album pics on the files, etc. Is
that correct?

(Now come the questions, leoliver. lol)

Do you have this same filter for playing flac files installed on your
computer? If not, what plugin did you dl?
Does it work correctly..meaning, can you play any and all music files that
have .flac extensions? (Im not referring to the plugin that lets you add
album art and tag info...just the ability to play flac files.)

Finally, if you have a different plugin that you downloaded to play flac
files, and it works, would you share the name with me please?
I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks leoliver.
Peace

Hi Russell,

I havent't tested the plug-ins you mentioned but you may use the
following alternative plug-in to play .flac and .ogg files:
http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

For the tags I can recommend this add-on:
http://wmptagext.sourceforge.net/

I use this together with the WMP Lyrics plugin:
http://www.lyricsplugin.com/

and even http://last.fm Scrobbler

Works fine on my Vista Home Premium 32-bit and WMP 11.

Enjoy!

Have a nice day.

Thank you amightysage.
Since your running the same OS that I am..(vista 32 bit..wmp 11) I assume
that youve exprienced no conflicts and have had no problem with your Vista,
in playing these flac files, and downloading and employing the filters and
plugins.
So, I will go ahead and use the links you provided, and download some stuff,
and see if I get the same positive results.
Thanks amightysage!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all.....MY NEW COMPUTER ROCKS, BABY!

That lyrics plugin is ba'dass. Very cool.
I never really messed around with media player plugins and such. I always
only used what was already installed in the media players, whatever player
that may be.
So learning that I can add to my listening exprience with some of these
little toys is pretty cool.
Im always afraid of downloading something to an existing program, and then
have something conflict with the media player im using, or another player
that i may have installed. Scary!

Thanks again my friend

Wouldnt it just be easier to install another player such as Win Amp? Or maybe
Microsoft should make an update to play FLAC files.

What's wrong with other people developing their own file format with handy
plug-ins? That seems like it's helpful and healthy for the multimedia
ecosystem.

Note that feature requests are trade-offs taking time away from other
feature requests. There's a lot of glorious and great things that can be
done in this field. It seems like the illiminable filter already gives you
what you want here anyways. =)

Thanks amightysage. I can now play flac files in WMP 11. Only thing is I
can't add them to my library. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

Did you install the WMP Tag Extender from http://wmplugins.com ? That might
help here.

If the plug-in doesn't add MLS registration the files will probably end up
under "Other".

I would be very glad to find out which plugin removes the flac entry
from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions
because the setup program from http://xiph.org/dshow/ adds it
correctly.

I have tested both WMPTagSupportExtender.1.4.msi and
WMPTagSupport11.exe
and they didn't mess it up.

Cheers.

I believe in specific your library classification comes from your
perceivedtype here-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions
, but that's just off the top of my head.

The actual docs should be referred to.

Hi Zach,

You are correct, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia
\WMPlayer\Extensions\.flac
is the key, value "PerceivedType" -> "audio"

I have tested on a clean Windows XP with Windows Media Player 11:
1. oggcodecs_0.81.15562-win32.exe
2. WMPTagSupport11.exe
3. WMPTagSupportExtender.1.4.msi

After the installation of every program I have run Windows Media
Player 11
and added a FLAC file to the library, it was correctly recognised as
audio.
All the times the registry key was correctly set.

My guess was the there was an older oggcodecs package, which didn't
add the "PerceivedType" registry value.

Cheers,
Cristian.
