Hi, I was going mad trying to get the Windows Media Sharing Network
Service started, but I've found a solution to the problem related to
the Universal Plug and Play Host service starting and then stopping.

First of all some background, as I've found a lot of people seem to
have the same problem I've been having...

- Computer is running XP SP2
- Windows Media Player 11 would not 'Share my Media' - it just sits
there for 20-30 seconds and then comes back with the box saying 'OK'.
- UPnP was installed via Add/Remove Windows Components (in Network
Services)
- I had the HTTP SSL service started (set to manual), the SSDP
Discovery Service started (set to manual)
- The Universal Plug and Play host would not run - I always got this
message:

"The Universal Plug and Play Device host service on Local Computer
started & then stopped.
Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do"

- This meant the Windows Media Sharing Network Service couldn't start,
because it's dependant on the UPnP Device Host.

I tried all of the solutions which were listed in other posts
(checking the above services were running, uninstalling/reinstalling
UPnP, checking the security permissions on

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\UPnP
Device Host

which were set to full control for local service.

So nothing was working, I was thinking I would have to bite the bullet
and re-install XP (as I just got a 360 and really want to use the
media sharing feature)...

But FINALLY found a solution (well it worked for me anyway)!!!........

- Open Regedit
- Navigate down to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host

- Right click on the UPnP Device Host Key, and click 'Permissions'
- When I checked this on mine, Local Service (which was the account
used to log on to UPnP) had no entry
- Click 'Add', then click 'Find Now', scroll down to the 'Local
Service' user and double click, then click OK
- You should see local service listed now, click OK.
- Then click on local service in the users list, and change permission
to 'Full Control'.

- Go back to Computer Management, Services, then click 'Start' on the
Universal Plug and Play Device Host.
- This started, and much to my joy didn't stop, so then just start the
Windows Media Player Network Service - this should now start no
worries as all the dependancies are running!!!

Hopefully this helps you out, after hours of frustration it's good to
finally have it working.

Good luck!

I don't have this folder..., could that be a problem? how do i get it there?

i did run regedit, and add local service as a user, with all the
permissions, but UPnP still won't run.

Hi SBX,

If you can't see the folder, it may be hidden - have you tried going
to My Computer, Folder Options, then choose 'view hidden files and
folders', as well as untick 'hide protected operating system files' -
this should then show up the local service folder.

Then right click on it and go to the security tab, and check to make
sure local service is listed there with full control - that's how I've
got it set up on my computer.

Then try going back to services and restart the UPnP service -
hopefully it works! If it does, you'll probably want to hide your
protected operating system files, so don't forget to go back into
folder options and re-tick the box.

If that doesn't work, at least you've eliminated 2 of the potential
issues - if you have a look at the other posts there's a few other
suggestions, such as reinstalling the UPnP service.

Good luck

Hey lads I was trying this and it wasn't working either, but I knew u were on
to something so I messed around with it for a while and all I had to do was
do the same thing for each folder under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host

so basically for each of these reg folders:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\Description
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\Devices
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\HTTP Server
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\HTTP Server\VROOTS
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\HTTP
Server\VROOTS\/upnphost
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host\Providers

...you will need to repeat the steps that dfoz79 posted which are...

Anyway lads this was annoying me for ages, Windows just deciding that it
shouldn't work anymore is a pain. Thanks lads and I hope my little extra info
here has helped someone else.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for all the good technical
suggestions. I have followed each one and verified that all services
mentioned are now running correctly. But I have one desktop that is
not recognizing or being recognized by my wireless digital frame,
although my (wireless) laptop and another (wired) desktop are
recognized by the frame (although the frame only shows up under Media
Sharing on the laptop, which seems to work just as intended).

Does anyone have any experience with the UPnP features of wireless
routers and the impact they could have on this issue? (My wireless
router is a Netgear RangeMax.) I can ping the frame from the
computer. Is there any other tracking tool that can be used to
determine where I am getting my breakdown? I am convinced that all
required services are started, but something appears to be blocking
the UPnP from communicating between devices.

Any help or suggestions would be so greatly appreciated!

running Windows XP SP2
ok, so this is how i've spent the last 5 hours...starting with this: WM11
file sharing won't start it does the infamous click ok, freeze for a little
while, then nothing happens and nothing is updated manuever. I do my research
and find the most common solution is to run services.msc and go turn on
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service in there. OH NOES! I get error
1068 which takes me to make sure its dependency services are running.. I
check and get http ssl is running; ssdp is running; but sure enough,
Universal Plug and Play Device host is Stopped. I try to turn it on and get
-The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer started
and then stopped- error message. Much more digging about the internet and
the only solution to this one I could find: go into regedit and set allow
full control for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host and
all subfolders for all users (including Local Service). AND just for good
measure I re-registered upnphost.dll, upnp.dll, upnpui.dll and restarted SSDP
and even ran a registry repair, virus scan, ad-aware scan, trojan scan, etc
etc.. AND I STILL CANNOT GET UPNP DEVICE HOST TO START WTHOUT THE
"The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer started
and then stopped..." stupid evil error message. Which prevents me from
turning on the Windows Media Center Network Sharing thingy, which prevents
file sharing from turning on in WMP11! One of those domino effect theories I
suppose.. Any help from here on out would be fantastic.
In short, I've tried everything that I know I've seen out there is there any
hope or do I have the one required possessed computer?

Works like a champ. I spent forever looking for a fix, and even called MS.
This is awesome, thanks!

I have the same problem as Lars, UPnP is running as is HTTP SSL but still the
Windows Media Sharing Network Service is not running. I have made sure the
UPnP is enabled on my router also but it makes no difference.

Please help

Thanks

I cannpt thank you enough! I'd had this problem forever, through WMP10 and
WMP11, and only on one machine -- of course, the one I'd selected to be my
media library and server...

I only wish this were the first website that came up when googling^h^h^h
livesearching for this problem!

My search terms, in case it helps other people find their way here:

error 1068 windows media player Universal Plug and Play Device Host started

Thanks for your effort on this problem.

I have had the same issue and done the same things: forums till I was sick
of looking.

I can now use my PS-3 the way it was designed.

Just know you helped one more person.
Thanks again.

This link fixed my problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsmedia.devices&tid=746860bc-f2fc-4777-a08e-9494d8d53014&p=1

The issue was that 'Local System' didn't have full control privileges to the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UPnP Device Host] registry key.

Great tip thanks - and it nearly worked for me but I had to also add LOCAL
SERVICE and Full permissions to the Windows Media Player NSS service before
That would start.
