I have a tape drive connected to my system, when I go system
properties, hardware, device manager it appears to come up and when I
clikc on the trouble shooting icon
I get a message back that it works.

When I go into MS backup wizard, under back desintion it only says
"file" and it
is grayed out. how can I change that to my tape drive. Or better yet,
why is it grayed
out and does not let me select tape. Is this reading some sort of
configuration file or something in the registry that has it set to
"file".

Any susgestions on how I can change this to tape.

Operating system? Win Me? If so how was this installed as MSBackup isn't
part of the core operating system. Have you ever been able to backup to
tape? What changes have been made to the system since MSBackup last worked?
How is the tape drive connected?

Backing up to tape using MSBackup often requires the following virtual
device drivers to be present (drvwq117.vxd, drvwppqt.vxd and drvwcdb.vxd)
although once working two of these can possibly be removed. If none are
present then reinstalling MSBackup might fix the problem however remember
that MSBackup hasn't been supported this century and is long past its Best
Before Date.
