Installing additional hard drive and later XP

I'm getting ready to install a second hard drive in my system and in the
very near future will install Windows XP on it to dual boot with ME.
I'm hoping someone here can answer my question. I know some of you have
XP (probably ALL of you by now!) and maybe someone has done this before.

I'm going to install a 100GB Maxtor and want to use Maxblast's option
that will copy the Windows ME install from my current 20GB drive to the
new drive so that the new 100GB drive will be my boot drive and the old
20GB drive will be additional storage. Then I'm going to install
Windows XP on the new drive (while keeping ME on the new drive for dual
booting) so that I can boot back to ME if need be without having to mess
with the IDE cable attached to the two drives. In case you're
wondering, I'll be doing a clean install of Windows XP using a Windows
98SE install CD for my qualifying prior OS (or whatever the correct
terminology is!).

My question is: will Maxblast wipe out the old drive when it moves
Windows ME to the new drive?

I'm hoping the answer is "No" but haven't been able to find anything
definitive in the Maxtor installation guide or via Google concerning
this issue. The installation guide does say "When MaxBlast is finished
copying data to your new boot drive..." but I don't want to make any
assumptions concerning this. I'd like the old drive available exactly
as it is now so that it would be possible to boot into Windows ME from
it (by changing its position on the IDE cable) in case something goes
wrong with the "MEcopy"/"XP install" scenario.

Thank you,
Nancy

Maxbalst will not erase the old drive - unless you ask it to in a separate
operation. The operative phrase is 'copying' not 'moving' - so the data
exists in two places after the copy (but only one after a 'move')

Make sure that you do the install of XP with the old drive not present on
the system - otherwise it may put the bootloader there, rather than in the
ME partition on the new drive.

Hey Noel!

Thank you for confirming what Maxblast does. I plan to get started this
weekend.

I appreciate the information about the XP install. I'm sure I would
have done it with the old drive present if you hadn't forewarned me.

Thanks again,
Nancy

.PS. I see from your website that you're in North Wales. My paternal
grandmother emigrated from Wales to Canada in the late 1800's. She
later met and married my grandfather in Canada after he emigrated there
from Scotland. They eventually ended up in the U.S. in the early
1900's. The world seems so small nowadays.

P.P.S. I assume that "Windows Nail" on your site means "Window Mail"?
:)

yeah - it's only a small chance, but depending on your BIOS, you could have
ended up with teh existing drive as teh default - and an XP tyhat wouldn't
boot without that drive present.

My father was born in Hamilton (Glasgow) - I was born in Slough (English
home of the Mars-bar), and I now live in Wales..... which makes me some sort
of mongrel! :)
