No new hardware, no new programs, Windows just won't shut down. All of a
sudden, after using ME for about 3 months, when doing a normal shut
down, Windows just won't. After about 10 minutes of staring at a semi
light screen, and hearing the computer fans still running. The system
just won't shut. Never even see the "safe to close" screen.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Thank you

I've got the same problem, but it happened 2 days after installation.

Let me know if you found a fix.

I've long since given all hope of windows shutting down everytime. Sometimes
it does, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I let it sit a minute and
punch the power button.

most likely, you installed some USB driver not win ME compliant.

Hi,

I have an HP6830, and have the same problem. Sometimes it shuts down,
sometimes it doesn't (most of the times). I called the HP support, and
after an hour of trying to fix it, the guy gave up telling me that he
has to ask for advice with a senior tech, and gave me a case ID. By
trying around, I found that by running msconfig, and disabling
vnetsup.vxd at startup, it shuts down everytime. This is not what I
wanted, since vnetsup.vxd is used for Microsoft networking, but it
allowed the computer to shut down. If anybody else experienced this, or
is a known problem, please reply,

FWIW...I found that by disabling my network card, WinME would shutdown
everytime. Unfortunately, I need my network card......

I tried moving the card to a different slot, playing with IRQs, etc., no
help. I gave up trying to get WinME to shutdown. I just wait a minute and
punch the power button, screw it anyhow....

Have you considered that the vendor of the NIC card may have failed to provide
hardware/software that is compatible with WinME?

Netgear FA310TX. They insist the the drivers I'm using are WinME compatible.
But whether the drivers are or are not compatible, doesn't change the
situation - it still seems to keep WinME from shutting down.

I took the advice and disabled my network card... also my Linksis home
network card has a "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power.", option under system properties. First I disabled the card. Me
shutdown perfectly. I then re-enabled the card but left the afore-mentioned
option unchecked (was checked). No problems now. Hope this helps...
