For my HP recovery disks, a menu pops up after starting up the computer with
the CD in the drive. One option reformats the drive and re0installs
everything, the other option allows you to keep all of your data while
reinstalling windows. I've had to do it twice recently. :-( Anyway, all of
your data is maintained but you have to reinstall most programs since they
are not 'registered' with windows anymore. Your version of internet
explorer may revert to an old version, etc. There is a lot of stuff to fix
and it can be a hassle, but all your files in My Documents should survive if
your recovery disk allows for this option.
