Uppercase Folders/Files

Okay, I may be missing something here, but I'm sure in Win98 there was an
option called "Allow all uppercase filenames". Can't remember where it was,
and I can't find it in ME. I've noticed more and more folders and files
being converted to all uppercase. I would prefer mixed case. Does anyone
know how to turn off the "all uppercase" setting?

Thanks for the reply, Nutcase. I finally found it on my wife's Win98
system. It's where you suggested I look in ME, but as mentioned in Jaypie's
post, it doesn't seem to exist in ME. I did some snooping in the resgistry
(Win98) and found out how the checkbox is put in the list of options. In
the ME registry, the setting is there, but the necessary entries to place
the option under Folder Options/View are not. What's interesting is, the
setting is turned off in ME. That is, to not allow all uppercase filenames.
Now I'm wondering if the purpose was to not allow the user to create all
uppercase names because it's now a reserved function in ME. I just can't
seem to find any rhyme or reason for the files that are showing up with all
uppercase. Some are Windows folders/files, and some are files (jpegs) I
copied from my Win98 system. (There are many files copied that are NOT
uppercase).

Very interesting indeed.

Yes, I see that "allow all uppercase names" has been removed from the view
tab in WinME. Not sure where it would be then.

You can't change the uppercase filenames. They are the actual DOS 8.3 names.
It is by design.

Well, actually, you can. At least I was able to change some files that
were copied from my old system. But what you're saying makes some sense,
Danny. I mean about the fact that they are DOS 8.3 names. I'd just like to
understand under what circumstances they become uppercase. All of the
files that I copied in that became uppercase were originally mixed case.

Well, after doing some checking, and experimenting, this is what I've found:

1. In the root directory, all folders are mixed case, except WINDOWS.
2. In the WINDOWS folder, I have a mix of both:
Uppercase folders include COMMAND, CONFIG, CURSORS, & SYSTEM.
Mixed case include Application Data, Cookies, Desktop, Favorites,
History & Start Menu
3. I can change the uppercase to mixed, although I haven't tried it with
any "Windows" folders or files.
4. I can create a new folder in all uppsercase letters, even though the
registry entry appears to be set to not allow this.
(HKEY\Current
User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\Advanced\DontPrettyPath=0)

As mentioned earlier, I have some jpegs that were copied from my Win98
system and include both upper and mixed. All were copied using Windows copy
function.

I haven't a clue.

Found this in the KB which does not reference Windows ME.  Seems they may have changed the rules (or ignored them) in ME.

Actually, they did change the display rules. In win98 all short names were
displayed in Proper case (the first letter capitalized). In winME all short
8.3 names are displayed as they really are. If you have a filename that is
8.3 characters long that doesn't contain any commas, spaces, etc. and is in
all caps, this usually means that there is no LFN entry for the file in the
FAT.

I think this was to fix a problem explorer was having while in ftp mode.
Transfering a file would often cause a "file not found" error when accessing
one of the beautified names.

By definition a true DOS 8.3 name is upper case only. Mixed case or anything
longer is considered a long file name.
What's happened is that MS removed the ability to massage and "purtify" the
file names as shown on the GUI. This was because of problems with case
sensitive FTP servers being run on 9x boxes having problems locating files.
What you saw in the 9x GUI might or might not be the real path and file
name. With Me, what you see is the real thing.
