Hi, I have Abit BE6 mother board. Two HD. First (primary) is WD 18 UDMA 66
hooked up with UDMA 66 controller supported by motherboard. Second Maxtor
UDMA 66 hooked by with IDE 33. When I went to control
Panel -->System-->device manager, and Settings for each HD, there is no DMA
box. Also, I noticed that
my bios reads WD mode 4 HD (which should be) but Maxtor as Mode 2. It should
be mode 4 as well. I checked the model no. at Maxtor site. Is there any
configuration problem Thanks for any input.

Control Panel/System/Device Manager/CDROM (expand)/ right click on the CD
device and select Properties/Settings tab. Select or deselect the DMA box.

See if you can download a utility from Maxtor to change the ATA mode.

If you have a VIA chipset, there is the possibility of the DMA being set
through SETDMA.EXE instead of in Device Manager. Do a search of your hard drive
for the file (Start | Search | For Files or Folders). I don't have the option
under Disk Drives either to set the DMA with the version of the drivers I am
using (VIAIDE.VXD version 2.03, VIADSK.MPD version 2.1.50.1)

Hey Carey - you one smart, A #1 cookie ;) Every time I run across your
pearls (like 50 ways to conquer a network) I save it to a special INFO
folder so I'll have it for reference when I need it instead of having
to re-ask the questions. Except for a couple of people that shall
remain nameless, I am blown away by the knowledgeable people in these
technical news groups and their willingness to share their experience.

Well done to you.. and the rest.
Sincerely,
Steve..

DMA - DMA or Direct Memory Access is a method of transferring data between a device and memory without CPU involvement. This way is faster. Also, the CPU can do other computation in the mean-time.

UDMA Mode 2 = 33 Megabytes per second for 3 milliseconds.
UDMA Mode 4 = 66 Megabytes per second for 3 milliseconds.

You must use an 80-conductor cable for UDMA Mode 4 (which are normally shipped with the HD)

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset updates.

I just checked the specs on this board. Most of what you're seeing is normal
for the way you currently have the drives hooked up.
The UDMA4 controller on this motherboard is an additional IDE controller to
the chipsets regular UDMA2 controllers and is seen by the OS as a SCSI
controller. As a result, the choice of transfer mode is strictly up to the
controller.
Since the BIOS of the controller is IDing the WD drives correctly it is
already running UDMA4. And yes, your Maxtor drive will ided as running mode
2 since it's attached to a mode 2 controller. Move it to the UDMA4
controller and it'll be ided correctly.

It is included in the 4in1 update (currently 4.29) and can be installed manually
by opening the ZIP file. It's under DMATOOL. But unless you're using the VIA
disk driver it won't function.
