Since re-installing Windows Me, in order to try to achieve a faster boot
time, I now get the following message at startup:

Error: Cannot create directory...
Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1: %2
Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting.
Windows may not start or run properly.

If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again.

Press any key to continue

After pressing any key Windows continues to load and seems to be OK.
Can anyone please explain the error message and a possible fix?

Regards and Happy New Year.

Look at the wininit.ini file to see what commands are there. It is one of
the commands there that is producing the error messages you see. Post the
contents of wininit.ini if you need help deciphering.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your help.

I do not seem to have a wininit.ini file - I do have a win.ini file though.
Is that the file I should examine?

Regards.

No, wininit.ini gets processed if present on every boot. It gets
processed by wininit.exe. If the file is there, wininit.exe displays the
message about waiting while your system is updated. The errors that you
post are generated by wininit.exe when it fails on one of the steps in
wininit.ini. If wininit.ini is processed successfully then it is renamed
to wininit.bak, check to see if you have that file. Also, since
wininit.ini is no longer there, try rebooting the system and see if you
still get the error messages. If you do, then reboot again with your
Windows ME floppy in the drive and see if you then have a wininit.ini file
in your \windows directory. If you do, copy it to another location so you
can look at the file once booted into normal Windows.

Hello Tom,

Thanks for the explaination.

I do have a wininit.bak file and it refers to some files which are no longer
on my system (Norton Files).

As you said - when I reboot the error messages are no longer there.

Thanks again.
Regards

In that case I wouldn't worry about it. It may have been the fact that
the files in wininit.bak are no longer on the system, depending on what it
was supposed to do with those files. If everything seems to be running
smoothly then I guess this would be a one time glitch. My only concern is
that several folks are reporting the same error messages. Thanks for the
feedback.
