While the Titanic has been examined in detail since the wreck was discovered in 1985, the sheer size of the ship has meant that prior to the digital scan, cameras had only ever been able to capture the decaying wreckage in snapshots.

A very generous offer was made by someone to pay most of the cost of this scan. Therefore we only need $375 to get this scanned in 4K (not including storage)! As you can see from the preview, we should be able to get a good quality release of this ready well before the 20th anniversary of the film later this year, and we already have the cinema DTS too.

Thanks to the very generous donations of OT.com forum members the scan has been fully funded! You are welcome to donate to help towards the other associated costs, and those donations should be directed to me as Cpalmer2k was only handling the scanning funds. And a big big thanks to him for doing so.

RU.08, I am willing to contribute to this thing of beauty. I have one request though (not demand!) that the full vertical height and horizontal width be preserved while scanning. I have seen images of many Titanic release print film cell strips that were being sold loose on ebay and elsewhere. What I noticed is that when I extract the full height of those cells and crop out the rounded edges at the sides, I get an aspect ratio of about 2.20:1 (around that) not 2.39:1. The 2.39:1 is achieved by further cropping the extra height.

RU.08,

It would have been nice to see the full print.

You guys could do a stabilized GRINDHOUSE release before the proper version, without cropping any picture out, can you not?

Kindly do ask the person who has the uncropped scan.

Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company, produced the scan with Atlantic Productions who are making a 4k-quality video documentary about it, using submersibles which studied the ship for 200 hours under the remote control of experts on a scientific ship above.

The story of the RMS Titanic which sank on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean has been the subject of movies, books, and public fascination for more than 100 years. Latest story-telling contribution? The Digital Twin -the Titanic shipwreck 3D scan made by Magellan! The largest underwater scanning project has turned into a huge success.

The basis for the full-size digital scan of the Titanic wreck was completed during a 6-week expedition last summer, using deep-sea mapping technology developed by Magellan Ltd. This is considered to be the largest underwater scanning project in the history of deep sea mapping.

The scan also shows ornate metalwork from the ship, statues, and unopened champagne bottles in the surrounding debris field. Furthermore, personal possessions, including dozens of pairs of shoes, can be seen resting on the seafloor.

No. Atlantic Productions has yet to provide the full Titanic scans to the general public. In case you are interested in accessing the Titanic 3D scan data, check with Atlantic Productions directly or visit their official website for any updates regarding the availability of the data.

The new scan, carried out in the summer of 2022 by Magellan and Atlantic Productions, reveals a complete 360-degree view of the Titanic, including small details like the serial number on one of the propellers.

Earlier this year, a team ventured to the original site to capture never-before-scene footage of the shipwreck. Just a few months later, deep water specialist Magellan in partnership with Atlantic Productions, made yet another journey to scan the Titanic in its entirety, creating a digital twin in impressive detail. The exact condition of the wreck, which has now split in two, has now been revealed and the surrounding 3-mile debris field featuring unopened champagne bottles and various personal possessions has also been precisely mapped.

The scan is detailed enough to show the serial number of one of the propellers. The images also show the bow still recognizable, while the stern was crushed due to its rapid descent and crashing into the sea floor.

Deep water specialists Magellan, who produced the scans, used two submersibles that traveled 12,500 feet underwater to produce what they describe as the Titanic's "digital twin," as well as mapping the surrounding debris field.

Expert Parks Stephenson said these new scans are a "true game-changer" for scholarship on the Titanic, which collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage and sank in April 1912, killing more than 1,500 people.

Stephenson added that the scans show "details that none of us have ever seen before," which opens the door for new research into the Titanic. "We've got actual data that engineers can take to examine the true mechanics behind the breakup and the sinking and thereby get even closer to the true story of Titanic disaster."

Deep water specialist Magellan Ltd. has performed the largest underwater 3D scan in the history of the 111-year-old Titanic wreck, revealing new levels of detail that will allow scientists to form a more detailed report of what happened back on that fateful day in 1912.

"All our assumptions about how it sank, and a lot of the details of the Titanic comes from speculation, because there is no model that you can reconstruct, or work exact distances," he said. "I'm excited because this quality of the scan will allow people in the future to walk through the Titanic themselves ... and see where the bridge was and everything else."

When the Titanic crashed into the sea floor, it picked up a host of iron-eating bacteria, leaving behind rust, experts say. It also acquired a bacterium called Halomonas titanicae that eats the rust and thereby destroys the old hull. Because of this cycle and other factors, experts say the Titanic will only exist for a few more decades.

The auction house, which is known for its specialization in Titanic items, is satisfied that it is. The instrument has been examined by experts in several fields and even underwent a CT scan for a closer look at its composition and damage.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate PD-old tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
