Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has seen this problem. HP claims that they
have not seen this problem (despite I have reported it before...)

I have a Photosmart C6180 installed on my network. Under XP, everything
seems to work fine. However, on my Vista x64 machines, the printer and fax
seems to disappear when there are changes in the network status (for
example, resuming from suspend, and disabling and r-enabling the network
interfaces, even when the interfaces being changed does not connect to the
printer). I would get a Vista error saying that the HP Network Printer
Services has stopped responding and then after this happens, I have a very
good chance that the C6180 printer and fax will disappear from my list of
printers on the machine.

When this happens, the only way is to run the HP software (which I
downloaded from the web for Vista x64) and add a new printer from there.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix?

Many thanks.

PS. Called local HP and their tech support gave me the stupid response of
"We don't know. Maybe don't suspend your computer?". I have a laptop
running the software, idiot......

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, please help us confirm the following questions so that we
can narrow down the issue:
1. HP Photosmart C6180 is attached to a Windows XP machine?
2. Does the issue only occur on this HP printer?
3. Does the issue only occur on Windows Vista x64 client?

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

1. HP Photosmart C6180 is attached to the LAN via ethernet. There is a XP
machine (laptop) on the LAN which has the HP software for XP installed and
that has not experienced the error or disappearance of the C6180 printer and
fax when network status changes.

2. Only one HP printer on my machine. However, there is a fax server
(SBS2003) on the network and that does not suffer from such problem. Then
again, it doesn't need so much software to make it work in the first place.

3. I have only tried it on Vista x64 machines. I will try on a Vista x86
laptop next.

OK. Just tested on a laptop with Vista x86 Business. It also happens on
that machine. HP Network Printing Service will fail which causes the Host
Process service (or something like that) to fail, which in one case also
caused the HP Digital Image Monitor to fail.

So yes, it happens on both x64 and x86.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Please understand we have no this printer to make a test. Therefore, I am
not sure if the issue is related to the hardware device. I still recommend
you contact HP support to see if they have any information about this issue.

I have already contacted them and got escalated to one of their higher level
support engineer. He claims that they have not seen this (right. 100%
occurance on all my machines) and they will not even look at a fix until
Vista SP1 comes out.

So much for buying from Microsoft Partners.

I have this problem also, my setup is as follows....

HP C5180 Printer connected to DLink DSL-G604T Wireless modem router
via Cat 5 cable. Vista Home Basic Laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400)
connected via Wireless.

Every couple of days the Printer Driver for the C5180 completely
dissappears from the laptop machine and needs to be re-installed.
Once the driver/software for the printer is re-installed everything
works fine for another couple of days, and then the same thing occurs.

I am continuing to troubleshoot this problem (much to the displeasure
of my client), but hope to find a solution soon, else something will
be thrown out the window. :)

Further Note...

One suggestion i have found on the web is to ensure the Printer is not
running with a DHCP assigned IP Address. I have just checked and
confirm that both the printer and the laptop are running with Static
IP Addresses, yet i still have the same problem. :(

Cheers

Surago.

This problem is related to a crash of the HPSLPSVC service which caused a
DEP violation. HP is aware of it and their solution is for you to turn of
DEP. It is like saying "our software has a bug and will not work with
anti-virus softwares so you should disable your av software....."

Just ridiculous!

And they claim that this is a Microsoft problem and we should contact
Microsoft......

My chat with an online HP tech:

Jerome: Hello Marshall.
Jerome: Welcome to HP Total care for All-in-one products. My name is Jerome.
How may I help you today?
Marshall Lai: I am running Vista x64 and x86 in my home and am having
problems with my HP c6180 software when resuming from sleep.
Marshall Lai: Seems that the HPSLPSVC keeps on causing DEP violations on
resume from S3.
Jerome: I will help you with this, please elaborate your issue, so that I can
assist you better?
Marshall Lai: HPSLPSVC causes a DEP violation in Vista (both x64 and x86)
when resuming from S3.
Marshall Lai: Typical event log:
Marshall Lai: Faulting application svchost.exe_HPSLPSVC, version
6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b5f5, faulting module hpslpsvc64.dll,
version 82.0.173.0, time stamp 0x457ce186, exception code 0xc0000005, fault
offset 0x00000000000550ad, process id 0xc60, application start time
0x01c7b196eff7584c.
Marshall Lai: And this will cause the printer to disappear from the computer
and will have to be added back in via running the installation software
Jerome: I understan your concern.
Marshall Lai: I have searched on the web and seems that other people running
vista and have HP network printers on their network are experiencing the
same problem.
Jerome: Please give me few minutes so that I can go through the mssage.
Jerome: Let us perform few steps to disable DEP.
Jerome: Here arae the steps:
Jerome: Disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
Jerome: Please perform the above steps and let me know I will provide you
further steps.
Marshall Lai: I really don't want to disable DEP globally in Vista.
Marshall Lai: One has to be crasy to do that. Also, in Vista x64, you cannot
disable DEP anyway.
Jerome: Marshall,I suggest you to contact Microsoft they will help you with
this.
Marshall Lai: Microsoft suggested me to contact HP as it is an HP service
that causes the DEP violation.
Jerome: Marshall if we disable the DEP it will be resolve.
Jerome: So I suggest you to disable the DEP by following the above steps.
Marshall Lai: It is like saying: The software has a problem with your
anti-virus software and you should disable your anti-virus software.
Marshall Lai: Will you be having a fix or will this be a requirement to
running your softwares?

I have an HP Officejet 7410 AIO (wireless network printer). I am having the
same problem. I have 4 networked machines. 3 XPs, 1 Vista Home Premium
(Dell 1705 laptop-Vista was factory installed). The Vista machine keeps
losing the printer. It's no where to be found. But you can't reinstall the
drivers (which I've conveniently left on my desktop as I've needed them so
often), as HP detects that they are there (somewhere). You have to uninstall
the drivers to get to reinstall the drivers, just to get the printer back.
It's time consuming and annoying. You don't look for the drivers UNLESS you
are trying to print.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Kathi

Is the printer located in the registry?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers

Are the printers local devices targeting the network card on the printer or
are these connections to a machine sharing the printers.

When you install the inbox driver for this device, does it also get removed?

When you say HP detects that they are there, do you mean the printers? Do
you know what application is detecting the printers? If HP has software
that detects printers who knows what they might do if the printer is no
longer detected.

Alan: thanks for responding. I know at this time the HP 7410 is not missing
in the registry key you specified. It may go away when I lose the printer,
but I just reinstalled the drivers for umteenth time yesterday.

No I am going across the network to print. (I think that is what you mean),
I am not printing to the HP 7410 printer located ON another computer.

Not sure what you mean by inbox drivers.

What happens is I go to print, the printer is gone in my list of choices to
print to. I go through control panels to see if the printer is there. It's
not of course. When I go to reinstall the drivers, the HP software gives me
the option to either uninstall or add features. I have to uninstall before I
can then RE install the drivers.

I know it's not a network issue (then again I had a lot of trouble going
through Norton Anti Virus to get my XP machines and Vista Machine to talk and
share), because when I do reinstall the drivers the printer is immediately
detected

Thanks Alan!

This sounds more like an authentication issue. I am pretty sure the printer
is still resident in the spooler, but your user account no longer has access
so you can enumerate it when opening the printers folder.

Does printmanagement.msc exist on your machine? If it does launch this and
see is the printer is listed? It sounds like you are using an XP driver.
HP does have a Vista driver for download for this device but the duplex
feature does not work as expected. HP gave me a fix for that.

Isn't authentication something Novell uses? I'm just using file sharing
through my local network, and have the machines going through my linksys
router. I do not use a login to access my machine. My user account is the
admin.

printmanagement.msc is not resident anywhere on my machine that I can find
(I did an advanced search).

I just want to add that this too frustrates me ... everytime Vista seems to
perform an automatic upgrade all my network printers dissapper and I have to
reinstall, but of course I don't notice until I really want to print.

If anyone has found a solution (which I presume is currently a Vista
problem) please let me know. I am tired of my printer being gone everytime I
need it.

I am becoming very frustrated by what seems to be the same issue everyone is
discussing re: printers dissappearing (usually when Vista does an automatic
upgrade it seems). Of course it always occurs when I most need the printer
and therefore I have to go throught the lengthy install for my wireless HP
printer. Has anyone found a solution (to what I presume is a vista issue)?

disabled the HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service and hope this helps my HP C7180.
Its been a couple of days and my printer hasn't disappeared yet.

This is a know problem. The blame is 50%. Part of it is the bugs in the new MS Vista stack. Part is on the HP service crashing when the driver fails and triggering HP CUE Device discovery to delete the printer. HP is working on a patch. If somebody volunteers a share I can send the updated DLLs.

Hi Rob,

I'd love to try this. How do I find the computer management services? Do I
need to completely uninstall and reinstall the HP software (about an hour)?
Or is it somewhere I can access now?

Thanks!

I did have the same annoying problems with my HP printer especially
getting the scanner function. I did receive various responses from HP
but one actually worked and although the printer/network sleeps it
always is recognized and functions. The drivers and software on the
install disks sold with these printers only function up thru XP but not
Vista. Here is the link to get Vista version download for HP.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-47754-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=391153&os=2093&lang=en

Sorry the addr is so long it wouldn't insert the full url as a link so
just copy and paste the full addr for the full function software for
Vista. Hope it resolves other's problem too.

I kept having disappearing printer problems even after downloading and
installing the Vista drivers, etc. The only thing that sort of solved
the problem, while replacing it with a different annoyance, was
directly connecting my HP6150 to my Vista computer via USB cable. Note
that I still have the printer connected to the network via wireless
router, so this Vista computer is connected in two ways to the printer,
via USB and via the router/ethernet cable. (Is that legal?!)

Now instead of disappearing printers in my printers folder, I have one
or two extra copies of the printer. (If I get rid of one, it just
reinstalls itself. So I leave them all alone.) I just make sure the
one I have marked as the default printer stays marked as the default
printer, and that my preferred settings are designated there (such as
default print quality, etc.).

I don't know if this will help in other people's situation, if there is
more than one Vista computer attached to the network and using that
printer. I happen to have only an XP laptop attached to the network,
(besides the Vista computer that's now linked to the printer in two
ways). So I'm not sure if someone else would find the printer still
disappearing on a Vista computer that's not connected by usb to the
printer but is on the network.

With the problems this HP product has caused me, I'm quite unlikely to
ever purchase an HP again.

Are you a professionnal computer analyst or an amateur ? this is exactly the
same problem I have with my Printer C5180, and that a lot persons have with
different brand of printers. You steared me toward a spooler crash which is
not the problem. The most plausible cause is network problem described in
this thread. Some people suggested disabling HP CUE DeviceDiscovery will this
work or not. I want a strait answer, no bull !

According to this very long thread, disabling de HP CUE DeviceDiscovery seems
to be a temporary solution (REDCATTOO has kept is printers for almost a
month).
The guys from MSFT Alan Morris and Ken Zhao seem to be as useless as HP
Support ! They keep asking questions instead of providing solutions. At least
we have a forum so share our experiences. Thanks to everybody, will keep you
informed if it works for me.

Yes, the people that I suggested disable this HP software have had success.
The funny thing is you never stated this software was installed You just
said some other HP software was failing.

No, I am not a software analyst, whatever gave you that impression? I just
like to help people with print related issues

Sorry I don't know all the software that you installed on your machine with
the printer since I completely avoid vendor drivers since they can cause
problems.

I'm keeping the printer. So the initial problem with Vista is not solved but

So is that HP CUE software installed on your machine? Did you disable it?

If the software in not installed, did you uninstall the driver?

I have just installed a HP 6310 about a week ago and am encountering the
same problem. I reinstalled the software then disabled HP CUE Device
discovery (I also tried the fix provided by HP
"CIT223969-HPCOM-Baloo32-v4(2).exe" but when I ran it, it said I didn't have
any applicable HP devices - perhaps because I ran it after disabling the HP
CUE...)

I will see if this suggestion works. I am debating returning the 6310 and
maybe trying something with network capabilities from Canon. I am a little
surprised with both MS and HP that a problem such as this (this thread
started five months ago) doesn't seem to have an official fix!

I have an HP 6310 on my SOHO network and access it from two computers running
Vista 64. One is a laptop and the other a workstation. I have been fighting
this for months.

I have hounded HP and they number of incidents sent to MS probably goes over
100. I agree that it is very difficult to understand why both of these
companies just ignore this. Don't they care?

Anyway, any future small items such as scanner or printer that I buy WILL
NOT BE HP. This driver issues is not new to HP. I had two HP scanners that
I had to discard simply because HP would not update the drivers as the OSes
changed. My HP Color Laserjet seams to have good drivers and support.

I have had exceptionally good experience with the Epson scanner and photo
printer. They are on USB and not Ethernet but they work perfectly all the
time and NO driver isses and that includes Vist 64.

I am thinking of filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission about
these HP products not being suitable to etheir intended use. ALL complaints
are susposed to be answered.

The more who do that the more effect it will have.

I mentioned that I was having problems with my 6310 and that I would post
again if my problem was resolved. I am glad I didn't post too soon! I also
am unable to accurately express my frustration with HP and with MS. It was a
huge mistake to purchase Vista instead of XP for my new computer. The fact
that I had a perfectly good HP PSC 750 which HP wouldn't support in Vista
should have been a clue for me, but nooooooo - I had to go out and purchase a
new HP printer which doesn't work with Vista.

HP support were very polite and suggested numerous things, most of which
didn't work. The only thing that seemed to work was to turn off the "CUE"
service as I mentioned in my previous post. That resulted in a working
(networked) printer, but left me with regular error messages which were
bothersome, but the printer worked. Now, today, although my printer shows
"ready" as a network device nothing prints. I have been working on it for
about two hours, including rebooting the computer, which curiously didn't
clear the print cue. I have just tried shutting off the Windows Print
Spooler service and turning it back on and then rebooting. For some reason,
I now have a working printer. Temporarily.

The joke is that this 2+ hour effort was merely to print address labels for
Xmas cards. This kind of time savings I don't need.

Sadly, the only folks reading this will have likely already purchased an HP
printer. If not, don't! If you can return yours, like I should have done, I
recommend you do so. Both HP and MS have known about this problem for at
least 6 months. I don't accept that they can't fix it, they are likely just
too embroiled in a pissing match over who should be responsible.

I have the same issue described on this thread, with my networked HP
Photosmart 3210. OS is Vista Home Premium with all of both MS and HP updates
as well as the HP CIT223969 "Critical update to prevent unexpected printer
uninstall".

the HP support suggested me to disable both UAC and the Antivirus, you may
imagine how my reply was. I think HP produces high quality hardware, but
software should really improve: actually, I got the svchost.exe_HPSLPSVC
crash each time my notebook resumes or the assigned IP changes.

not to mention the scanner part of the HP 3210 is not present on Windows
Vista Scanner applet.

Perhaps when you install a Critical Update file on the HP website intended to
stop this happening?

You don't mention what HP printer it is -- that file is there for the 7410 AIO

I have tried everything possible to get my HP PSC 500 to work with Vista, I
had no problems with XP. The driver is there, but it presents an error when I
go to print. I have contacted HP and they tell me because my machine, which
is in perfect working condition, is 5 yrs old it will not work with Vista. I
find this totally unacceptable and would like to find a solution to this
other than spending more money unneccessarily to get a 2nd printer that I
don't want or have room for
Any real suggestions out there?

I've been fighting this problem ever since Vista arrived. (A black day). HP
tech spent many hours in live support, and finally sent me an uninstall link
and a reinstall link, which amazingly got the HP6180C working. BUT, the next
time I plugged in the laptop, I watched the drivers disappear from the
control panel, and Vista announced that it had found new software. THe
reinstall was only partial, so nothing worked, but when I unplugged the
printer from the laptop, and replugged it , the "found" message reappeared,
and all the drivers were installed, and the printer worked. Happens every
time. Not a complete answer, but maybe it works.

Nearly every time I turn on my HP PSC 1610 the printer disappears form

Vista attempts to load drivers and often hangs half way thru and I
have to remove the USB cable and replace for the driver installation

I have not found a solution so if you do please post answer

I can't reach the HP Website at the moment -- we've just had a storm
and I think the cable got wet <g>

However go to

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers

and enter your model name Photosmart etc and then on the next page
enter VISTA (I presume) and look down the list of drivers and fixes for
one that is worded to stop repeated installations.

Ah -- got there:

Critical update to prevent unexpected printer uninstall

Download that and install it. I suggest you SAVE the file when you
download it in a location you can get to and then right mouse click on
it and select Run as Administrator to install it.

Hope that fixes it

You might want to download and install:

Critical update for memory card file transfers on networked products
with Microsoft Vista

HP Printing Diagnostic Utility

Please let us know how you get on.

@DJT , try configuring the port of the all-in-one and in the place where
you refer to the IP address of the all-in-one, try referring to the host

I have had the same problem with A Dell Latitude E6500 running Vista and
an HP 6310 All in one, having to re-install the printer software again
and again.
I've tried all the solutions suggested here and nothing keeps the
printer from disappearing. Nothing works, of course-neither HPs' nor
Microsofts' fault...I'm basically screwed until I can afford a new
printer, and it sure as hell won't be an HP.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my HP Phogtosmart C6180. It has disappeared from my Win 7 Pro(64-bit) system - Not for the first time - but keep having the error message during installation: Installer cannot access HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM. At this point I can Retry or Cancel. Unfortunately Retry doesn't achieve anything and the only option I'm left with is to Cancel, which terminates the installation.AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
