I recently upgraded to Vista and am using Windows Mail for my mail server. I
get the following pop up message box when sending to some of my regular
contacts:

"The server you are connected to is using a security certificatethat could
not be verified.

A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is
not trusted by the trust provider.

Do you want to continue using this server?"

Does anyone know of a setting that will eliminate this? It is frustrating
and more than a little annoying to have to manually allow these emails to
send.

To troubleshoot this problem I need to know:
The name of your outgoing (SMTP) mail server, whether it is using a
port other than the standard '25', and if the SSL option is enabled.

Incidentally, Windows Mail is not your "mail server", it is a mail client.

I'm having the same problem. Smtp server is smtp.primus.ca (my home ISP).
Outgoing mail is on port 25 and is not secure. Incoming server is a Zimbra
server from my office, which is an IMAP server requiring SSL, and is on port
993. I've installed a certificate file from my office corresponding to the
server, which I believe is supposed to fix problems like this, but it hasn't.

The topic of security certificates is not in my area of expertise.
However, you should not have to install a security certificate on
the client machine. It sounds like there may be a discrepancy between
the IMAP server name as entered in your Windows Mail account, and
the server name as installed on the server's certificate.

The server name should be smtp.tools.sky.com.
If you continue to get an error message, please copy and paste it into
a reply here.

Turn off the SSL option. You can do so by going to
Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced.

I too only today started having this problem.....I can say yes and it goes
ahead and lets my mail download.......what is causing this? Has there been an
update or something that has changed settings somehow? I have Vista,
windows mail and Mediacom, and Trend Micro virus control.......

There was a new windows defender update today.......would this have caused
this to happen?

Windows Defender and its updates are 100% compatible with Windows Mail.
Can't say the same about Trend Micro antivirus updates.
Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
First, go into its settings and disable any interaction with email, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, do a trial uninstall of the antivirus.

Another option (instead of uninstalling Trend Micro) is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of
overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

I turned off the virus control for the mail...and it did not do anything to
help the matter.....
my popup says it is from Winmail.exe and it says
"the server you are connected to is using a security certificate that could
not be verified.
A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying
against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.
Do you want to continue using this server?" click yes or no
Could it be something that Mediacom has done?
What is the difference between Mail and Live Mail?
I do not understand why this has started all of a sudden.........it was fine
yesterday....somthing has set it off.........

That particular error message has nothing to do with antivirus problems.
Something in your settings is not right. If you get an error message
that contains the server name, post that. If not, I need to know:

a) both server names, and which boxes are checked under
Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
b) The port numbers, and whether the SSL option is checked under

Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced.

Hello. I had the same problem, as well. I'm sure there are several reasons
that would generate that error message. Mine was that the pop and smtp
servers were set wrong in the propertys settings. If both are set as Pop,
for example, pop.gmail.com, then your email will generate the same error
message and still send the email. You pop has to be the pop and your smtp
has to be the smtp, such as pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com. You can check
by clicking on tools at the top, then accounts, and then propertys for your
emial account. When the settings box appears, click on the servers tab.
That is where you change them.

Does that help?
Let me know

Do you get an error message when you try to send ? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

I can't verify anything about echomeshop.net since its website is in Chinese.
It is not likely that the mail.echomeshop.net supports SSL, so disable the
SSL option. You can do so by going toTools, Accounts, select that account,
Properties, Advanced.

If no improvement, who provides your connection to the Internet?

One World, One Promisse!

I had POP 995 and SMTP 465, both checked for SSL. I simply unchecked the SSL
for the SMTP and it worked. It was happening to my Yahoo e-mail account.

Bad move. Now you won't have the added benefit of SSL.
The issue with the security certificate is easily correctable by updating
the server name.
