I upgraded to IE8 yesterday, and have experienced this problem since then. I
was previously able to open the attachments, but now I am getting the error
message, Command failed to execute.

Thanks. It was Rainald who posted earlier today that changing the icon used
to start Windows Mail may fix all but .TXT and .JPG attachments.

This method works for most file types (Office files, PDFs etc.).
The problem remains with JPG and TXT attachments, however.

That it works has to do with the fact that the standard link
(LNK)/shortcut in the Start menu (and on the desktop / the QuickLaunch
lost) is not used when WinMail is called from IE.

The same effect can be obtained if one fixes the entry in the LNK's
properties in the field "Run in".
The default entry causes that the a temporary file needed for opening
the attachment can not be created and therefore not be found in the
specified directory.

If one edits the field and enters a location with full write access
(f.e. %UserProfile%) the temporary files are created there and be
opened.

Taking this route is easy enough and provides the normal access to
WinMail.

Caveat: JPG and TXT file will not be opened (as said above).

Thanks for referring to my findings.
To be complete: Not changing the "icon" but editing the properties of
the LNK/shortcut used for launching WinMail (specifying a different
destination in the field "Run in:").

IMO you might add this recipe to your standard recommendation as an
alternative to the radical solution of uninstalling IE8.
I for one can live with this workaround, opening TXT and JPG attachments
after saving to a temp directory. May others feel the same.

Good point. Will do.
Incidentally, in my Win7 the field is labeled 'Start in', and the path says
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail".

Oh I see. This seems to be the correct term.
"Run in:" was *my* translation (my Win speaks German and unfortunately I
do not have a MUI pack)

> and the path says
> "C:\Program Files\Windows Mail".

Yes, that's the culprit!
I assume that with the bug the system tries to place the temporary file
there (god knows why). At least it's trying to open it from there (the
error messages from Office apps show this path).
If one changes the destination to a directory with full writing
permissions this fixes the problem (except the said JPG and TXT files).
I think just %UserProfile% will be the best replacement for the
program's path.

IMHO, uninstalling IE8 is not a "drastic" solution to this problem (and it
worked for all attachments). It is unacceptibly tedious (to me) to have to
save .jpg, .txt or even forwarded .eml files and then open them somewhere
else. Sincere question: What does IE8 offer that makes up for the loss of
productive time?

Does the error message say something like, the file can not be found?
If so, that's a known issue that is affecting some who installed IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
Even without uninstalling IE8 you can make it work for all but TXT and
JPG attachments by doing the following:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

Strange advice.
But most HP support is not yet aware if the IE8-WinMail bug.

Just curious: How does one re-install WinMail?

Many - not only *you* - want a solution <g>.

But there is none at present, except uninstalling IE8.

If you could live with my workaround which reduces the problem to only
JPG and TXT attachments:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered

attachments.

It would be nice if you could report back if this works for you.

Outlook tends to hold unto the default mail program designation.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

That's just normal.

The Bug only appears with WinMail (not with OE).

It's a Vista security settings issue.
So it does not affect XP systems.

So far there is no fix as no one really knows what might be going in.

The only way to cure the problem is to uninstall IE8.
And there is a workaround reducing the problems to JPG and TXT files:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening

From all we heard so far there is no problem with *saving* attachments.
It's just opening attachments from WinMail directly.

This very strange. It must be a different issue.

It should be %UserProfile% (with a leading "%" key and one at the end.

Very strange.
I would suggest to delete the shortcut and try to launch WinMail from
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\

Thereafter you can create a new shortcut.

This will only solve the problem *partially*!

It may *SOUND* ridiculous, but it is anything but that:
Obviously you have *different* shortcuts for launching WinMail (a) in
your desktop and (b) in the Start-up menu.

Besides other - still mysterious - conditions, one of the factors
relevant for the "IE8-WinMail-bug" is the location for storing the
temporary files needed for opening the attachments.

I'd bet that there are different settings in your shortcuts on the
desktop on the one side and in the Start-up menu OTH.
Pls check the properties of both shortcuts and look for the entries in
the field "Start in:"; then report back what you have there.

In addition:
Pls test things with JPG- and TXT-attachments (you may send a mail to
yourself with both types of files).
Wait a while and test again and again. Use IE for surfing in between.
I'm rather sure that even with the destination %UserProfile% or %Temp%
in the field "Start in:" sooner or later trying to open JPG and/or TXT
attachments will lead to error messages telling that the file could not
be found.

Thanks for your co-operation

Well, I did use the proper "%" prefix, and I did try deleting the Shortcut

unsure on how to start over at "C:\Program Files..."

You were also correct re all your surmises about what I was doing re Photo

this point it's probably the photo itself that can't be edited.

But, that issue is moot for me presently as I'm just trying to undo David's

I doubt that David's fix has anything to do with your sending and receiving
failure. But just to be on the safe side, create a new shortcut.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe, right-click
on that file, select "Create Shortcut".

Do you get an error message when you try to send or receive? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Sorry, I can not understand what you did and what not :-( :-(

Did you only *TRY* to delete the shortcut and the thing could not be

Or did you delete it?

And: Did you create a new shortcut as I had suggested and (Gary too)?

What happens when you click on the C:\Program Files\Windows

Launching WinMail this way gas been suggested before. It's not a fix,
however. :-( :-(
The problem remains with JPG and TXT files.

Did you check for attachments of these file types?

The same result - JPG and TXT still crashing, other file types OK - can
be gained and made persistent by a workaround:

Did you check with JPG and TXT files?
After having applied the above workaround normally the problems remains
with the latter.

Really no attachments at all?
He may try out other file types by sending a mail with attachments of
common file types to himself (with a cc: to your account).

This sounds really strange. With Word DOCs (a) normally the title of the
error message is different and (b) the message specifies where the file
was supposed to be located (C:\windows\system32) and not just "file not
found".

Are you sure that your husband launches WinMail with the changed
shortcut??

Normally the workaround with changing paths only leaves a JPG and TXT
files not opening.

Do as advised by t-4-2.
I fir one prefer to stay with IE8. I can handle the remaining problem
with TXT and JPG attachments by saving the attachments and then opening
them.

Dick obviously refers to clicking on the "Read Mail"-icon in the
toolbar.

This is a known workaround with the same effect as editing the path in
the shortcut.

Hi Vicki, I had the same problem when I updated yesterday 6/4/09. This
solution worked for me:
Instead of going to "start" and then hitting "windows mail" from the list, I
first right clicked on "windows mail" and deleted it from the list.
Then, I went to "start" and "programs" at the bottom.
I scrolled to "windows mail" and right clicked on it.
In the pop-up box, I scrolled to "send to" and clicked the "desktop (create
a shortcut)" option.
Now, I just click the shortcut that is on the desktop and I don't have any
problems opening attachements to IE8 mail.
Let's see how long this works!

There have been quite a few fixes for this problem. I have the same issue;
cannot open jpeg, doc, txt attachments in WinMail. BTW...I cannot right click
to save to another location either! This is madness. With the exception of
removing ie8 I have tried all the solutions and none worked! I just can't
figure why ie8 would honk this up.

Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I really wish this would be a "solution" and it would work persistently
for you. After all of my experimenting I have to seriously doubt that,
however.

What you did in fact is nothing else then my working with editing the
"Start in:" field of the existing shortcut.

Things work fine thereafter with most types if files. But the problem
remains with JPG- and TXT-attachments, however.
Pls try it with these two types if files (just mail attachments to
yourself).
Should it work OK right now, wait a while and try it periodically.
I'm pretty sure that the problem will reappear with with these files
types.

I'd really wish that it might be different but reality is different.

Thanks again

Sorry, Bruce, I really wish you were right. But there is not a single
fix so far - except uninstalling IE8. My workaround can not really be
called a fix. And in all of the threads in this problem there has not
been posted any fix.

> I have the same issue; cannot open jpeg, doc, txt attachments

With workaround (pls read again below) you could reduce the problem to
JPG and TXT files. But that's it. Nothing better at present (except
removing IE8).

What happens if you right-clock in the paper-clop?

Strange: Initially you said that there have been several fixes. Now say
that nothing worked.

> I just can't figure why ie8 would honk this up.

No one can say at present what exactly might be the case.
What's clear is the fact that it has to do with storing the temporary
files needed for opening with the associated app.
And it's clear that it has to do with the Vista security means.
Something is wring with the permissions for the "temporary Internet
Files" (TIF). But nobody knows what exactly is the case and what the
simple install of IE8 changes.

As said before: Really strange.
I've been through each and any of the reports on the attachment problem,
but I do not recall that anyone reported a problem with *saving* an
attachment.

And no error messages at all??

> What I meant by quite a few fixes should have been phrased quite a

Oh, I see.
None of the posted recipes does cure the problem.
Whatever people have done, the bug came crawling back sooner or later.

As said the only workaround that reliably works is manipulating the
entry in the "Start in:" field of the shortcut used for launching
WinMail. But it leaves JPG and TXT attachments behind.

No, I don't think so.
If it was only a problem with PDFs this could easily be fixed by running
"Repair" for the Adobe Reader - either from "Help" in the menu or from
the lost if installed software.

It rather seems to be the "known" problem which affects many system
(though not the majority) after installing IE8.

There is no fix - except uninstalling IE8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

You can generally open attachments if you save them to another folder in
documents for example. This works most of the time but not always. I spoke to
Microsift tech help about this and was told that the problem was caused by a
corrupted IE7 file. They siad the ony way to solve it was to delete IE8 and 7
then reinstall a pure version of IE7 and then upgrade to IE8. I felt this was
to time consuming so I just live with the problem and save the attachments.

That was an interesting comment from Microsoft tech support.
If they know which file is corrupted, they should be able to release a
patch that corrects whatever is corrupted. Asking the user to go all the

How might that be done under Vista?
So far I thought that IE7 was an integral part of Vista and can not be
uninstalled.
Would be this a wring assumption?

And where might I get IE6?

I believe IE 7 is packaged with Vista. I upgraded from IE7 to IE 8 and that
is when I started experiencing the problem. Microsoft Tech told me to revert
back to IE7, install a pure version and then upgrade to IE8 and that should
solve the probelm. I am not convinced they really knew what the problem was
but they were going to take remote control of my computer and do it
themselves. I decided I had enough problems and was not convinced they were
going to solve this one. I can live with the extra effort to open mail

I'm having the IE8-WinMail on all of my four computers.
No problem, however, with saving and the opening the attachments.
AFAICS a problem with opening a saved attachment might only appear if
there would be a problem with file associations.

Most interesting! Or better say: Really Strange.
Corrupted IE7 (which was working without any problem) would cause a
problem under IE8??

Just curious: Did the support person know about the problem before?
Did he/she check some internal databases?
Did he/she point to any KB articles?

I would try out that way would I know how to remove IE7.

Apart: You know that the problem can dramatically be reduced by editing
the shortcut used for launching WinMail?

This works! It's a pain but it has stopped me removing 8 to reinstall 7 which
would have been a greater pain. Let's hope MS pulls it's finger out and kills
the bug, but SOON please.

Following onto my earlier email. Having run mail from IE8 a couple of times
I reverted to habit and clicked the Winmail icon and, magic, everything now
works as it should! All attachments I tried (jpg, txt & doc) downloaded
perfectly. So I did a restart and lo and behold everything still works
properly. Fingers crossed.

Pls let us know how things develop.
I'm pretty sure that the problem will return with JPG and TXT
attachments.

I have had the same problem. Vista, IE8 and MSN, unable to open attachments.
I talked to MSN Support Team today and was advised Microsoft was aware of
the problem and are working on a fix. No indication regarding how long it
will take.

Thanks for that report. Apparently MSN Explorer 9.6 is also affected
by the failure to open attachments after IE8 is installed.
