I have Vista 64bit with a Contacts folder which seems to be totaly
impotent as far as exporting. According to the Vista Help it should be
possible, but I do not have the Export button!!!
Anyway, all I want to do is to synch my Vista contacts with the
Contacts in my phone running Windows Mobile 6.1.
What Microsoft suggests is to buy Outlook, import the contacts into it
from the Vista Contacts folder, and upload them into the phone. I tried
it with trial Outlook and it works. But I don't need Outlook for
anything else, and don't want to buy it.
Is there a workaround?
Help is much appretiated.

I suggest that you re-read the "To export contacts..." section of
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/65fbffa9-0ba5-45d8-a60f-ded4e86f01de1033.mspx
again. You will want to export your contacts to a CSV file which then can
be imported into Windows Mobile 6.1.

I was following Help on my PC, not the one on MS Windows website. But
the instructions are practically identical. They both lead you to that
Export button/command on the toolbar -
1. Open Windows Contacts by clicking the Start button , clicking All
Programs, and then clicking Windows Contacts.
2. On the toolbar, click Export, and then click one of the following
formats:
CSV (Comma Separated Values). This is a generic file format used for
exporting or importing information to and from databases or
spreadsheets.
vCard (folder of .vcf files). This format is used by many other
programs. It is typically the best format to use when sharing contacts
with someone who is using an earlier version of Windows or who is using
a different operating system.
3. Click Export, select a folder where you want to store your contacts
in the new format, and then click OK.
4. When a message appears telling you that the contacts export process
has completed, click OK, and then click Close
The trouble is, as I said before, the toolbar in my Contacts folder
does not have that Export button/command. Here are screenshots of the
three ways of opening the Contacts folder -

There is a Burn button, but not Export. And as we all know, toolbars on
Vista folders are not configurable!!
I may be missing something, but it would appear that the Help
instructions are not for Vista Home Premium, and that export is not
available on my version.

Sounds like your Contacts folder is using the Music folder Template.
Open your contacts folder>right click in a blank area to the right>choose
customise this folder>from the drop down list choose Contacts>apply>OK

I didn't know about the "customize this folder" trick. It works, I can
see the Export button. Will try it tomorrow.
This will be a great help for other folders. I have had a lot of stress
over setting folder columns manually, only to see them disappear next
time I opened the folder.
Thanks again

Thanks for the feedback.
Fyi...if the Export option is not present..ensure the Windows Contacts folder is configured properly
The default Windows Contacts folder in Vista is found in your user profile
C:\Users\<your windows ID>\Contacts
- Single click to select the Contacts folder (ensure you have selected the Contacts folder)
- Rt. Click and select Properties
- Click on Customize tab and choose 'Contacts' for the option 'Use this folder type as a template'
The folder view in Explorer should no provide(Organize, Views, New Contact, New Contact Group, Import, and Export). To Export
select one, more than one, or all, click Export, and save as a Csv file.
- Note: The Csv file may or may not import into your phone(which may be why Outlook was suggested).

Now, when I open the new Contacts folder in the phone, I see all the
contacts. When I tap on a file, a dialog box opens asking if I want to
save so-and-so into the device. Click yes. The name and the data is
saved (don't know where), and can then be accessed by the phone's
Contacts application.
The Contacts folder in the phone can later be deleted.
So, I've got what I wanted - I can transfer contacts from Windows Mail
on my Vista PC to the phone without having to buy Outlook. It can only
be done on a file-by-file basis, but I don't mind. I am retired and only
have personal contacts, a manageable figure. Besides, I have used the
trial Outlook to sync all contacts initially, so it will only be
maintenance.
Thanks again for help.
