I recently purchased a HP computer with Vista Professional. In windows mail
I cannot open attachments. I can save the attachment to a folder and open it
from there, but not in mail. I get an error message that there is not a
program associated for the attachment.

What type of file is the attachment, .pps .ppt .doc .jpg etc?

Tools Menu>Accounts>Add>email account>fill out the set-up wizard form.
If you need any more assistance, then you need to provide us with some
detail about the account, such as the mail provider, your ISP etc.
