Well Doom 2 is a pretty old game, it probably won't just install and work on
your system. I'm not sure I've heard of Heroes 2, is that based on the TV
show Heroes, or are you talking about Heroes of Might and Magic, or maybe...
some other game?

For Doom 2, look around the Internet for a Windows 9x update. A lot of
people have taking the "now" open source game Doom 2 and made new programs
that are Windows compatible.

As for your other problems, sounds like you need to update your windows
video card drivers. Look up your computer online, find out which video card
you have and look for a driver update for it. You might also run Windows
Update (in the control panel) and see if there's an optional hardware driver
update listed, Vista usually installs a fairly recent version of nVidia and
ATi drivers.

Respond here if this doesn't help, include your computer make and model# as
well as which game specifically you are trying to run.

I think HOMM2 is a full-screen dos game. If so, you will need to download
DOSBox and run the game from inside of it.
If you have troubles getting it working just post your questions.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, old DOS games, not really easy to get going, but as someone just said,
look for a program called DOSBox, it emulates an older DOS computer and lets
you run old games (albiet poorly). Might let you get the game going.

Good luck,

The only time DosBox emulates old games poorly is if you haven't
configured it correctly or your trying to run DosBox on a machine
where you'd be better off just running DOS. If I had a penny for every
time I've helped people with DosBox only to find out they are trying
to run it on 400/500mhz PC's then I'd be rich.

.NET Framework are a bunch of system files needed to run some programs
developed with Visual Studio. For future reference, you are probably running
Vista 32-bit version, so the files you want (if you have a choice between
x86 and x64) is x86 files, the X stands for 386, or 486 which was the call
numbers assigned to the old, but popular Intel chips upon which all current
home PCs are based. x64 was invented to indicate that you were using a
64-bit processor. Slightly different, but i digress.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

The link above should take you to the Microsoft .NET Framwork 1.1 Service
Pack 1 download page. It's a 10 meg download, run that then try to play
around with DOSBox.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx

Link above is the page before the first link, if it doesn't work there's a
link to .NET Framework 1.1 under Popular Downloads.

If you can't find the file, try google, but only download it from
microsoft.com.

Oh crap, and you CAN have a 64-bit processor, but still run a 32-bit
operating system. Most people are running 32-bit, so even if you have a
64-bit processor you are more than likely still going to want the 32-bit
(x86) version.

At this point phil I would say something like RTM (Read the manual) for
dosbox, basically DOSBox isn't setup by default for CD-ROM access, but you
can tell DOSBox to mount your CDROM drive as a drive letter in DOSBOX.

If you want me to hand hold you through the entire process, I can. I just
have to look up the answers, I don't have them written down right now.

Basically if you setup DOSBOX to mount your CD-ROM drive, then you can just
follow the installation instructions from the manual for the game.

It's gonna be tough, your game is ancient and you're trying to run it on a
new system.

I went to google and typed in "how-to dosbox" and this is what it spit
out...
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?p=22825 - simple guide, might
help.
http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=index&FAQ=1 - more comprehensive
guide, takes you through installing flashback (great game), might be able to
figure out how to get heros going with this
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=DOSBoxWiki - The DOSBox
WIKI. Should be able to find answers to any questions you have here.

If you still want me to tell you how to get your game working, I can look up
your game and spell it out for you, but I think if you study these links a
little you should be able to get the game going and have a better
understanding of how dosbox works.

DOSBox is a self contained application, when you do things to DOSBox you're
not changing ANYTHING else on your system. It's not like DOSBox is taking
over things on your computer. For all Windows knows it's just another
program running stuff.

As long as you don't delete your C:\Windows folder you'll probably be OK. If
you're really worried about it... read before you do. Make a system Restore
point before you start, just in case. Same pre-cautions you should take when
you install any program onto your computer.

OK .72 is just newer than .60 the commands haven't changed really, the
program is still pretty early in life so a lot of bug fixes go in often. Why
your \ key doesn't work could be something to do if you're not using a US
keyboard layout or something. Try to figure out which key it is on your
keyboard, try keys around enter, worse case, copy the \ character from
notepad into DOSBox. I'll try to do this without backslashes...

I just downloaded DOSBOX, lets begin the fun...

1. Make a folder on your C: Drive, call it DOS-HD. Path to this folder on
your HD is C:\DOS-HD
2. Find the DOSBox folder in Windows, look for an icon called DOSBOX.conf,
right-click and run as administrator. This brings up the config file in
notepad or whatever text editor you use.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of this file, after the [autoexec] line, enter
the following lines:

mount c c:\DOS-HD\
mount d d:\ -t cdrom
c:

Note: The d:\ is the letter of your CD-ROM drive on your computer

4. Save the .conf file and start up DOSBox
5. Assuming you have the CD for HOMM2 in your CD rom drive, type D: and
press enter. (You should get a D:\> prompt)
6. Now type the command used to install HOMM2, usually it's "INSTALL", and
sometimes it's "SETUP" If you're not sure, check the game manual, or simply
type "DIR" and see if you can find the install filename.exe.

Assuming this all goes as planned, you should be in the HOMM2 install
program, The program should copy any files it needs to the C: drive (which
is really the C:\DOS-HD folder on your computer), and if the program asks
which sound card you should use, choose Sound Blaster 16, with the default
settings wherever possible. DOSBox emulates several sound cards, SB16,
Gravis Ultrasound, etc.

Once the installer exits it should tell you what to type in to start the
game. Try it out.

If you're stuck again, let me know where I lost you.
--
If for some reason the HOMM2 CD just doesn't want to work, you can try this.

1. In Windows, Make a folder on your C: drive, lets call it HOMM2CD (So,
C:\HOMM2CD)
2. Copy all the files from the HOMM2CD into this folder (just drag and drop
from your CD-ROM drive)
3. Bring up the DOSBOX.CONF file again.
4. At the bottom of the file again, change the second mount command:

from:
mount d D:\ -t cdrom

to:
mount d C:\HOMM2CD -t cdrom

5. Restart DOSBox, type D: and attempt to setup the game again.

Basically DOSBox uses the copy of the CD on your HD to install the game.

If you manage to get the game going, Ctrl-F12 increases how many CPU Cycles
DOSBox uses, can be good to tap this a couple times if the game seems to
stutter a lot.

Good luck...

Me too, my bad for just assuming you were on a DOS game, I mean Heros of
Might and Magic 2, didn't that come out like "a while back"?

Any reason why you aren't playing HOMM5 or 3? I heard 4 sucked ass, or maybe
it was 3, I can't remember.

DOS Box won't work for you if it's a Windows application, if it is for
Windows then you can just delete DOSBox I guess.

I'll let someone else take over, I have no idea what's going on with this
game.

ok - I dug out my old Heroes of Might and Magic 2 cd (not the one thats part
of the Millennium Edition, but the original) and version 1.0 installed and
runs just fine. It does not require administrative privleges or any special
setup. Its pretty amazing that a game designed for dos/win3x/win95 and
utilizing DirectX3 runs without any problems.

There is a separate DOS version on the cd, If you still have your dosbox set
up and have the cd connected, you might try
D:
cd \heroes2
install.exe
which is the dos installer for the game (setup.exe was for the newfangled
windows)

Back on the windows version: Since it uses old DirectX calls, have you
loaded the DirectX9 runtimes? Vista comes with DirectX10 which leaves out
some of the older calls. By reinstalling DirectX (go to
microsoft.com/directx) you will get the old pieces back and it won't mess up
(or downrev) your directx10.

Hope that helps!

A lot of

Yeah, old DOS games, not really easy to get going, but as someone just said,

look for a program called DOSBox, it emulates an older DOS computer and lets

you run old games (albiet poorly). Might let you get the game going.

Good luck,
Andy

..NET Framework are a bunch of system files needed to run some programs

developed with Visual Studio.

DOSBox is a self contained application, when you do things to DOSBox you're
not changing ANYTHING else on your system. It's not like DOSBox is taking
over things on your computer. For all Windows knows it's just another
program running stuff.

As long as you don't delete your C:\Windows folder you'll probably be OK. If
you're really worried about it... read before you do. Make a system Restore
point before you start, just in case. Same pre-cautions you should take when
you install any program onto your computer.

Back on the windows version: Since it uses old DirectX calls, have you

Me too, my bad for just assuming you were on a DOS game, I mean Heros of
Might and Magic 2, didn't that come out like "a while back"?

Any reason why you aren't playing HOMM5 or 3? I heard 4 sucked ass, or maybe
it was 3, I can't remember.

DOS Box won't work for you if it's a Windows application, if it is for
Windows then you can just delete DOSBox I guess.

I'll let someone else take over, I have no idea what's going on with this
game.

runs just fine.

Hope that helps!

..NET Framework are a bunch of system files needed to run some programs
developed with Visual Studio.
