I have seen several different people with this problem, so I am not the only
one.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate, and everything was working fine, until
one day I went to reorganize my music, and when I tried creating a new
folder, it wouldn't let me rename it. "File or folder does not exist" pops
up. This is quite frustrating, I have tried everyone's suggestions. They all
fail. If anyone has found a way to fix this annoyance, that would be
fantastic.

p.s. I miss XP

Where were you trying to create this folder?
You can't create a folder in, or use the "My Music", "My documents", etc, as
these aren't really folders.

Use the Music folder under your login account, or under the Public account
(if you want to share the music)

Please let me know if you get the answer of your question from some body
because I also faced the same problem of renaming the folders on my desktop.
Thanks a lot !

solution now?

I just ended up getting a new computer anyways. I really hope everyone can
figure out why Vista is being so lame. nothing seemed to fix it.

I love my macbook tho.

Probably just a case of insufficient permissions, or virtual store.

Sadly this does not fix it on my machine. Lemme explain something
different in my situation. This error ONLY occurs with network files
(Desktop folder redirection, or network shares). I have ownership (in
the case of the desktop redirection exclusive access) and am member of
the administrators account.

Local files are no problem at all. With the exception of a weird folder
rename problem with permissions even tho I own the folder/files in
question, but that is for another thread as it only happens with
dvddecryptor....

Hi brokenmachine65,

Thank you for reminding me about the *Offline File* issue to. It has
been added to the tutorial.

brokenmachine65

Question then... Is there anyway to get offline files to work? Or is it
just non-functional in Vista x64

I'm not very familiar with using *Offline Files*, but maybe these links
can help.

'Windows Vista Team Blog : Offline Files'
(http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/01/29/working-with-offline-files.aspx)

and

'Windows Vista Help: Understanding offline files'
(http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/93a550df-34cd-4497-85d0-8732602f59591033.mspx)

Hope they help,

Joe.... What are you talking about? The file you suggest is the same
file (diff name) as the above, the only difference is:
1) He posted newb instructions for the technically challenged
2) We pointed out that offline files must be disabled in certain
situations (like mine) for the above mentioned files to have any
effect.

When I download and click to merge the recommended .reg file, all it
does is open a text file. I am not able to merge it into my registry. I
have already tried every fix I have seen on the internet, and I have
also downloaded and run both Registry Mechanic and RegCure.

Nothing is working for me to eliminate this problem. If I wasn't stuck
using MS Office, I would have already ordered a MacBook Air. This Vista
o.s. is the worst p.o.s. since Windows 98.

If all it's doing is opening a text file when you right click and choose
merge then you have bigger issues with your PC that you need to look
into.

P.S. 98 was a very fast and stable platform for it's time, when I was
using it I never, not once, had it crash on me and I ran it from late
beta's all the way till XP. If you want crap look at Windows BoB or
Windows Me. If you want a Mac then buy one, put some version of windows
on it so you can run the programs everyone else has but be happy knowing
you paid 3x for the right to say you own a mac :)

Hi Tim,

If this is opening a TXT file instead, then right click on the REG and
click "Open With". Select "Registry Editor". If it not listed, then
manually Browse to "C:\Windows\regedit.exe" and select the regedit.exe
file.

See if you can get to merge now for you.

Hope this helps,

The good key (see the position of attributes key)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
"Name"="SamplePlaylists"
"Category"=dword:00000003
"RelativePath"="Sample Playlists"
"ParentFolder"="{3214FAB5-9757-4298-BB61-92A9DEAA44FF}"
"LocalizedName"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,\
6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,\
00,5c,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,\
2c,00,2d,00,32,00,31,00,38,00,32,00,30,00,00,00
"Attributes"=dword:00000001

The wrong key (see the position of attributes key)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions.jmg\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
"Name"="SamplePlaylists"
"Category"=dword:00000003
"RelativePath"="Sample Playlists"
"ParentFolder"="{3214FAB5-9757-4298-BB61-92A9DEAA44FF}"
"Attributes"=dword:00000001
"LocalizedName"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,\
6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,\
00,5c,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,\
2c,00,2d,00,32,00,31,00,38,00,32,00,30,00,00,00

To replace the bad key by the good with RegEdit :

1. rename bad key "
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
" with another name.
2. import good key (see up)
3. Reboot

I search this solution since many months on the web without no other
solution!! And now it’s good for me …

Bonne chance !

Liolia,

I'm glad to hear that your REG file problem is fixed now.

Have you tried this tutorial yet for the *FILE OR FOLDER DOES NOT
EXIST* problem?

Hope this helps,
