is there a way to limit some users from having access to
word and excel, but let others have full access to them
using terminal server with 2003 server?

Hi Ted,

You can do that with 3rd party software,
you can try jetro for that.
the App is Cockpit,
With cockpit you can manage your application and security for each user or group depends on active directory.

the link to the compant site is

Good Luck
Yaron.

There are a number of ways to do this:

- Implement software restriction policies on the terminal server based
on group memberships. Requires AD 2K3.

- Modify the default ACLs on the office executables. IE give execute
access to members of a group called 'word' on msword.exe (or whatever it
is).

- Use third party software for application publishing and permission
control on the published applications.

I had the same issue to get around it I did

Modify the default ACLs on the office executables. IE give execute
> access to members of a group called 'word' on msword.exe (or whatever it
> is).

I then used a program called Start builder(free ware) which creates custom
start menus for usersbased on AD.

Way cool. If you add user1 to the MS Word group next time that log on they
have it in there start menu.

A little tricky to setup but well worth the hassel

You can do this with Windows Server 2003 natively, without any 3rd
party software using Software Restriction Policies. Take a look at these
links for more information:

Hope that helps!
