Is there any installable version of the Remote Desktop Client that will run
on Windows 2003 Server and will support the client using multiple monitors
for a single connected host?

Can we just copy the MSDTC.EXE application from Windows 7 over to Windows
2003?

At least for XP there exists an optional install of a newer remote
desktop client. Maybe it exists for or works on 2003 as well.

The installer for the XP version refuses to run on Windows 2003 Server, even
though it's clear these are actually the same OS with different packaging.

I couldn't find any installer for an OS other than XP or Vista. That's why
I asked the question here.

In that case I would just unpack it from the installer (first step
is usually a /extract:path or /t:path /c on the installer commandline,
and when you have the .cab or .msi futher unpack it with a good unpacker
like 7zip).
Then you know what files are in it. When it is just a .EXE copy it
to any convenient location, when there is a .DLL copy that to system32
or to the same location the .EXE was copied to.
Then try if it works. The "installation" is usually completely
unnecessary.

Using this technique, I was able to

1) "Install" the .INF file of the installer directly and reboot

2) Run the new version of MSDTC.EXE from the installer extraction folder, as
you describe above.

Unfortunately, even after selecting the "Use all my monitors" checkbox on
the Display tab, only one monitor is being supported. Is there a specific
version of Terminal Services required on the server side in order to get
multi-monitor support to work? I am connecting to Windows 2003 Server.

Looks like the server must be 2008 R2 or higher. Bummer.
