Prolific is just one chip manufacturer, there's also FTDI, Silabs,
and others. They all work more or less the same.
I've been using a no-name converter based on the Prolific PL-2303,
and it's output levels are acceptable for RS232 (-9V 0V +10V). For
the general purpose of for example digital Fluke ScopeMeter and
Magellan Meridian GPS communications it has been working very well,
no problems whatsoever :-)
As my Tablet too has (obviously) no built-in serial RS232 port, I've
set the USB-converter to a fixed "COM2". Some Bluetooth devices
usually tend to invent a new COM port each time they are connected,
but with USB-serial-converter I haven't yet come accross that problem.
These things are pretty cheap, on eBay they seem to go for around
$10. Not much of an investment, IMHO.
Hope this helps!

A typical use of a tablet, laptop, or hand-held is for field service,
and there are huge quantities of devices out there using RS232 or 485
to communicate and needing a proper serial port for monitoring or
programming.
The mindless removal of a perfectly good interface is very very silly.

I of course had my tablet. Now happily recovered from its encounter with a
