sound device problem

HP omnibook vi6200 had win 2000 installed. I reformatted the disk and
installed WinXP.
Sound stopped working. Ali Audio accelerator WDM driver -" this device
cannot start". Tried to update; got msg "wizard could not find a better match
for your hardware than the software you currently have installed".Sysinfo
gives status as "error".

The driver is microsoft 12/08/2002 5.12.6003
The file is ac97ali.sys.
Help urgently required about how to proceed. Have looked in driver guide
where there are a number of download packages but don't know which to select
and why the existing driver has a problem.
