Hello,

I've been struggling with a rather strange problem - when we moved from
wsus2.0SP1 to wsus 3.0, we moved the service to a new box - updating group
policy to point to the new server. We now have a box detecting and reporting
updates to 'appsrv2' but trying to download them from the old server
'appsrv', where they are not available (we moved boxes and changed from
doing express to normal downloads at similar time)

As can be seen from the logs below, it's updated wsus client correctly from
the new server (from older logs not included it's even installed updates
which have been downloaded from the new server, but the four patches listed
below it keeps looking for on the old box which isn't available.

Does someone have any idea of what to try to resolve this?
Paul

In looking at your log file I am guessing you kept your old database with out
editing it. If this is the case your database contains like this one
referencing your old Server

http://appsrv/Content/61/67ED31F80B367637D196C284DA87B3268D22BE61.exe

This line came from about half way through your log file.

The problem you are running into is the fact that WSUS has static references
to web address of the update stored in the database.

As for a solution to your problem, there are 2 options that I can think off
the top of my head:

Option 1: (Most Dangerous)
I have never tried this I have always gone with option 2, I am not even sure
if this would work. But with what I have seen and done with WSUS this may be
possibile.
This one involves editing the WSUS Database and requires that you saved the
CONTENT folder from your old WSUS Server and placed it in the new CONTENT
folder on your new WSUS server. You will need to search your entire WSUS
database for any reference to you old server and change it to your new
server. Your search string will need to include the slash at the end of
appsrv/. THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION I WOULD RECOMMEND. Option 2 is far less
stressful but far more time consuming.

Option 2: (I have done this but it is not fun)
Start by writing down all of your settings for WSUS. Like I said it is not
fun. Then uninstall WSUS from the server. Reboot server then reinstall WSUS
pointing to a new database. Enter all of the settings you wrote down at the
beginning. Next syncronize the WSUS server with Microsoft. Finally the
least fun part of all approve the needed updates for download. This last
step will need to be done after the server has detected all of the computers
on your network. If you copied all of the settings back into WSUS correctly
you should not need to change your Group Policy, but it doesn't hurt to
double check them.

I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ANYONE NEEDING TO DO THIS TO USE OPTION 2

Thanks Ed,

Although, from what I can tell - at least through the wsus3 interface this
isn't the case - when you right click and get file information for an
update, it does point to the newserver. Having looked through the database,
I can't see any non-binary references to appsrv.

Similarly, i'm pretty sure that as we moved servers that the database was a
new creation.

Could it be that the server in question has stored locally the location of
an old patch that it hadn't been told to apply (we just tell it to notify
for download) and therefore is still going to the old url ? Is there
anything that can be reset locally?

in fact - fixed - I deleted the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder on the
server in question , stop/start automatic updates and it's downloaded the
files correctly.

Let me guess Automatic Updates on your server is configured for "Notify me
don't automatically download or install them" not "Download updates for me,
but let me choose when to install them"

If this was the case you will also see this anywhere else you have the same
configuration. You may also see the same thing on other computers that are
configured for "Automatic" or "Download Only" if the download was interupted
when the switch over occured, but that would normally be only 1 update on a
computer. You will have to delete the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder
to fix this problem, or manually run windows update on microsoft's website.

What most likely caused this scenario, Paul, is that the client had jobs
queued for download from the old server when you pulled the plug. The client
continued to try to download from the old server.

The real 'fix' for this is to use the BITSADMIN tool to clear the BITS
queue:
