My WSUS server is now finding all or most of the client computers, and it
seems that some of the clients are getting updates properly.

It appears that the WSUS server is not downloading most of the necessary
files (even though 8 of 87 computers are completely up to date)

When I look at the main WSUS console, it says
=======================
Status of Downloads
Updates needing files: 609
Downloading 0.00 MB of 399.15 MB
=======================
This morning I approved some additional updates to Install. Before I did
that, it thought it was lacking about 8 GB+ of files.

Questions:

1. Are the updates stored in the WsusContent folder?
2. If yes, can I assume that when this works OK I should have about 8 GB of
stuff under that folder?

Thanks!!

George S

If teh Home page is showing ~ 8GB of files that need to download, then yes
that is the footprint you should see on the Hard Drive.

Next questions is why aren't you downloading the files. Has this ever
worjed in the past or is this your first attempt at downloading content? Do
you have a proxy Server between you and the Internet?

Do you have BITSAdmin 2.0 installed and can you tell if there are any BITS
jobs running?

Have you tried re-running a Sync?

I set this up a few months ago, but I had the server name instead of URL in
the Group Policy until recently, and also the wrong port on the top of that,
so I just got that resolved a couple of days ago with help from the newsgroup.

So the downloads have not yet worked so far. It appears that the computers
that are updating are those where the user has local admin rights.

How do I find out about the BITS admin version?

I don't have a Proxy server, but I have a Sonicwall with content filtering
service. I looked in the Sonicwall log, and have not seen any events that
reference this server.

Here is some info from the end of the SoftwareDistribution.log file:

If BITSADMIN.EXE is installed, it will give you the version number at the
top of the header in the output.

You can obtain BITSADMIN v2 from the Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003
SP1 CDROMs in the \Support\Tools folder (I believe).

The Sonicwall is the Number One cause of "Range Protocol Header" faults.

Contact Sonicwall for assistance in configuring the appliance, or search
this newsgroup via Google Groups for a plethora of threads discussing this
issue over the past year and half.

Thank you again Lawrence! I found a link on the web that referenced a
Sonicwall hidden menu where I can allow the right traffic through. The link
is below:

http://www.wsuswiki.com/ContentFileDownloadFailedAccessDeniedNoHTTP

I did not have to reboot the Sonicwall as they recommended - the downloads
started coming in immediately.

Have a great day!

Thank /you/ for the link. I was not aware than an article had been posted
to the WSUS Wiki site.

In the future, I'll direct everybody to that link.

Good to know. I don't recall anybody else mentioning that they needed to
reboot their SonicWall. I don't know the author of the WSUS Wiki document,
but if I get a chance, I'll follow up and see if I can get some confirmation
on if/when a reboot might be required, and maybe get the document updated.
