I am trying to install WSUS on a server 2003 machine which connects to the
internet via a linux web server running squid as a proxy server.
I followes the step by step guide and selected to store updates locally,
this is so i can transfer them to another wsus server on a disonnected
network.
Step 3 of the guide is Cinfigure the network connection, if you have a proxy
server use the WSUS Console to configure WSUS to use the proxy server. At
this point I go to launch the WSUS and get an Internet explorer window with
an error
http://computername/WSUSAdmin
The requested URL could not be retrieved, unable to determine the ip address.
Generated by webserver_name squid/2.5 stable9

I have tried also
http://ip_address/WSUSAdmin
I now get a better window with a grey bar across the top saying
Windows Server Update services error
Access denied
Network policy setting prevents you from accessing Windows Server Update
services. See administrator.

All I am tring to do with this server is download the updates so I can
transfer them to another server to update all the clients that are not
connected to the internet.

Any ideas what I am missing, apart from a few brain cells.

This is a DNS error. If you're using the Linux box as your DNS server, then
you'll need to configure DNS to properly resolve the 'computername' of the
WSUS server.

You also need to make sure you've properly configured the IE proxy bypass on
the WSUS server, so that it's not trying to connect to http://computername
via the Squid proxy server.

Hmmmm..... a "Network policy setting" eh?

I'd venture a guess that the request got routed through the Squid server,
and the Squid server is denying access.

Again, it's a function of properly configuring the proxy bypass on the WSUS
server.

As a starting point, download the Client Diagnostic Tool from the
microsoft.com link in my sig, run the tool on your WSUS server, and post the
results here.
