Two computers were shipped with Office 2007 trial, but this was
apparently successfully removed via Add/Remove programs (no MSIs left
over in %windir%\installer). They do have the Office 2007 Compatibility
Pack installed, but so do other computers that have never had Office
2007 installed. However WSUS (3.1.6001.65) thinks those two computers
still need Office 2007 updates.

I could try following the manual removal instructions from KB928218 but
I assume I'd have to uninstall the Compatibility Pack first?

If the Windows Update Agent says updates are needed.. then updates are
needed.. unless you have evidence that attempting to install the update
actually FAILS.

Approve the update and let them install.

The compatibility pack requires O2007 updates. Maybe the other system have them
already.

That confused me, as it has its own service packs, but I'll take your
word for it.

I just observed that the SPs for O2007 seems to started being required as soon
as I deployed the compatibility pack.

There's a new packing mentality for O2007 -- the "all-in-one" service pack.
One package applies to everything "Office 2007".
