I HAD WSUS installed on a different server that did not work, so I wanted to
split it up onto it's own server. To avoid having to re download all the
files, I just copied them over to the new front end server file location.
I installed the front end on the first 2003 server and made all the
appropriate adjustments to make it work with the backend SQL server as well.
I can log into the administration site just fine, and navigate around. The
computers are showing up as hitting the server looking for updates, because
it is populating the computer list.
I noticed, however, that it's having a hard time trying to download updates
when I sync. I thought maybe it was the file copy done previously, so I
renamed that Wsusconent folder out of the way, and then did the wsusutil.exe
reset command from the front end server. It is now beginning to sync back up
and download all the files, but every 5 minutes or so, it will die and stop
downloading. I go into the front end server, restart the services, and then
it takes off again. I do get an error in my event viewer about a stored proc
on the SQL side running into errors, if this will help I'll gladly post
details about it.
Any help on getting this thing to run through the downloads by itself would
be great
Thanks!
Also, observing the Home Page of the WSUS Console for any error messages there
would be helpful.
It's rare that we've observed the Update Services service shutting itself
down.
Finally, scan the WSUS logfile at %programfiles%\Update
Services\logfiles\SoftwareDistribution.log for any other messages of interest.

I have WSUS setup to approve all updates no matter what kind they are
(drives, updates, etc.) so I woud think that it should have downloaded them
all. When I go into the updates section though, there are still 470 or so
that say they failed to download. I can try to manually start they download,
but they still don't work.
And it's not just certain kind's of updates. It's all sorts of them, and
just randomly too. Any ideas why only certain updates would choose to not
download?
