We are having problems with client machines unable to communcate with the
WSUS server. Funny thing is that when the WSUS server is restarted they can
communicate again.

The errors we are getting are as follows:

Has anyone experienced this problem? Any assistance would be much apreciated.

Most likely the 0x800710dd errors on your Windows XP systems are caused by a
defective security descriptor.

The manifesting of these 800710dd errors, in the absence of any other error
codes, has, in almost every occurrence noted here, been traced to this
defective security descriptor issue.

See this article for additional details:

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for your reply. I followed the instructions on the link but am still
experiencing the same problem with the 0x800710DD error with a HTTP status
code of 200 which would suggest that the request sent by the client was
successful.

The windowsupdate.log entries appear as follows:

Actually, you're getting a '401' from the SimpleAuthWebService

and, interestingly, the log doesn't show any attempt to access the
ClientWebService.

Based on something Torgeir discovered and just posted about, and having
ruled out the Windows XP security descriptor issue, the other thing to check
is to verify that the IIS virtual server and virtual directories have the
correct permissions -- specifically that anonymous access is enabled on the
virtual directores where it should be.

See http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com/articles/016.htm for full details
on the permissions that should be configured.
