Windows 2003 Server Standard, blue screen, 0x00000050, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, installation

Anyone,

Recently tried upgrading (not fresh install) a WinNT4 SP6a machine to
Windows 2003 Server Standard. Installation appears to go fine until
PC reboots to complete the setup. After startup screen appears, PC
goes to a blue screen with stop code: 0x00000050:
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Have seen some posts saying could be various hardware issues such as
bad RAM, yet, all hardware worked perfectly fine on WinNT. Did try
changing RAM to check that and still get same error.

I can start the computer in "Safe Mode", however, end up getting the
message "Cannot complete Setup in Safe Mode". Only option is a button
that reboots the machine in order to complete setup.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I am
attempting to avoid a full re-install of the system.

Jacob,

A couple of things.

Does this system have a SoundBlaster sound card in it?
Did you attempt to install Windows Server 2003 over WinNT 4.0 SP6a with NT
running some type of Antivirus software?

Usually 0x0000050 errors are caused by third party drivers which just don't
play well with Windows, especially during an upgrade. I recommend removing
all non-critical expansion cards during the upgrade, and putting them back
in once the upgrade is complete.

Also before doing any upgrades always remove any AV software.

Thanks for the response Bill. To answer your questions, no
SoundBlaster and I was running AVG Free Version antivirus software. I
did disable the software before the upgrade, but I did not uninstall
it.

Some info about the machine...

Pentium 3, 450 megahertz
DVD-ROM
Iomega Zip Drive 100
Floppy
2 Harddrives: 20 Gig and an 8 Gig. Both on primary IDE line with 20
Gig as master and 8 gig as slave
Diamond Multimedia Viper V550 AGP NLX 16 MB S3 video card
3Com 3C905B-TX Fast Etherlink XL PCI card
56k modem


The modem, network card, and video card are the only expansion cards.
I tried taking out the modem and network and that made no difference.
I replaced the video with an STB card and that made no difference, but
I also am not sure if the video drivers got swapped out when I changed
cards (anyone know how to do this in the middle of a setup?) I also
disconnected the slave drive and that made no difference either.

Again, I can get the computer to start in safemode (yet I get the
message that cannot continue setup in safemode), so it seems to point
as drivers. Any idea how to get the setup to overwrite the installed
drivers with defaults (which I assume are the ones safemode is using)?

More information...

I installed second copy of Windows 2003 to a directory different than
my upgrade directory and have been able to get the computer to start
properly. I.e. I know that I can run the OS on the machine I have. I
also found the following information in a file called "ntbtlog.txt" in
the /WINNT directory for the upgrade. If I am understanding what I am
looking at, then it looks like the video and modem drivers are my
problem. Any help getting around these would be very welcome!

When running WinNT4, I had my swap area on a second disk. Could this
be the problem (seeing as it might be some kind of memory issue)? If
so, any ideas how I could move the swap area back to the main disk?

For anyone with a similar problem.... remove any software such as
firewalls, anti-virus, etc. before upgrading. In my case, it turned
out to be firewall software that I had disabled, but not uninstalled.

I ended up just re-installing the machine. As I was adding my
software back on, I found that a firewall product I was previously
using--Kerio Personal Firewall--was the most likely cause of my issue.
When I installed that software and rebooted, I got the wonderful blue
screen with the STOP error. I was able to uninstall the firewall and
have had no problems since. I had disabled the firewall before doing
the upgrade, but I think it must install something that 2003 didn't
like.
