IS File Replication Service needed in a small domain

If a small Windows 2000 Server domain only has one server (which is the
Domain controller), and no member servers, does the File Replication
Service need to run on the DC?

I presume not, because the Services entry describes this service as "Allows
files to be automatically copied and maintained simultaneously on multiple
servers."

I can't find ANY documentation from Microsoft that says that if there is
only one server in a domain, then this service is not necessary... but
maybe no one ever runs only one server in a domain. (This domain has 5
client computers.)

If the service is required, what is it replicating, and where?

Thanks.

I don't believe it is "doing anything" with only the one server.

But just "leave it alone",...don't try to out-smart-the-system.
That service is not bothering anything,...leave it be.

I'd be concerned that SYSVOL would be shared on startup if FRS isn't
running. Would have to try it, but then like you said Phillip, 'what's the
point?'.

Exactly. I don't know for sure what might or might not "break" without
trying it,...but I just don't believe disabling native functionality that is
normally enabled unless there is a very specific reason to do so and it has
already been tried and tested as an industry "norm" to do so. When someone
tries to outsmart the system,...it usually outsmarts them and they end up in
a heap of trouble.

The internet (and magazines in the past) is full of articles that in the
name of either "security" or "performance gains" tell you to "....turn off
this, turn off that, poke this, tweek that, and twist this over here..." and
then the people doing it end up with a mess on their hands that is very
difficult to fix.

I just spent 5 months putting two Savings Banks back together after some
previous somebody went "GPO Happy" (among other things) that made such a
mess of the place that we had to just throw up our hands and wipe the whole
thing out and start over from scratch and build a whole new system on the
existing hardware plus buy a little new hardware to get things off the DCs
that should not be on DCs. It's doing pretty well now. be aren't
completely finished yet,..so it may be 6 or 7 months :-)

Sounds to me like somebody owes the previous IT manager/team a beer.

OK, I will leave it alone! I was asking partly as an educational
exercise, but if the advice is not to truly understand what is going on
in the system, then I will follow that advice. :-)

Thanks.

Well for 'learning' / 'education' in a lab enviroment - have at it. But in
this case, what's the lesson to be learned and the knowledge gained? I gotta
think there's alot more interesting things to spend time learning about.

Hello DWalker07,

It has to run, see here the list where AD depends on:

Active Directory / LSA
Computer Browser
Distributed File System

File Replication Service

Kerberos Key Distribution Center
Net Logon
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) (if so configured)
WINS (in Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions for backup Active Directory
replication operations, if DNS is not working)
Windows Time
World Wide Web Publishing Service

That's about the size of it, yeah.

Gotta thank 'em for something :-)

A fellow consultant told be last Weds night that Vista was the best OS MS
ever produced because of all the money he made of fixing the messes created
by it. :-)

I suppose that is called looking at the bright-side.

I turned off file replication services (net stop ntfrs -> type in command
prompt) after reading this:

http://serverfault.com/questions/240107/should-file-replication-services-be-running

If you only have one domain controller in your network, then yes you can turn
off File Replication services (FRS).

-> Hope this will work for the errors after reboot
