We have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server, running a RAID 5 array on the PERC
4/DI Controller. The array was originally using 3-18 GB drives with 2
partitions, but is now configured using 4-36 GB. We need additional space
on the C: drive which is set up as a Dynamic Simple Volume. It has been
partitioned at 8 GB, but we are now needing more room.

I am unable to extend the partition into the unallocated space using the
built in tools in Windows 2000 Server. Is there any way to exend the C:
partition onto the unallocated space?

Partition magic is the only way I know of. I have used it on Novell boxes.
From what I understand, the windows utilities will not let you extend the
system partition.

From Symantec web site:

There are currently NO versions of PartitionMagic that support Windows 2000
_dynamic_ drives

If memory serves, Dell provides DOS drivers for PERC4. You can clone the
whole array volumes or C: only (the former is preferred) if move/backup
data, then reconfigure volumes and reimage. You'll get Basic instead of
Dynamic disks.

I'll look into that.

Nonetheless, sounds like it's not going to be an easy task.

Thanks to all!!
Open to any other suggestions.

I've got the same problem - mine is with dynamic system volumes.

I've seen Volume Manager by Veritas, and Storage Manager by Commvault and
they look pretty neat. But it's like trying to kill a fly with a sledge
hammer. (And the price difference between a sledge hammer and a fly swat is
considerable).

I'm trying to find something a bit more appropriate. Let me know if you find
anything.

I don't relish the thought of imaging and reconfiguring volumes.

One way to optimize the performance of your Windows Server is by resizing your partition. That is, gather all free space on your hard drive for the existing partition. But for most Windows Server users, resizing partition is not an easy work to do but a hard task, which makes most of the people turn help from the partition resizing software. A server is a very important part for a company system, which contains loads of significant data and files. If you do partition resizing with unsafe software, your precious multi-media files, your important data would be lost without any chance of recovery, leaving you only sorrow and desperation. So I suggest to use the server partition manager http://www.disk-partition.com/download-server.html

New information, some software vender has developed a freeware Aomei Partition Assistant Lite edition <http://www.extend-partition.com/partition-assistant-lite.html> which could freely manage server partitions, this software allows people move partition to adjust the position of unallcated space, so it is more flexible.
