I'm looking for a external hard drive that's compatible with Windows server
2003.

A lot of the Western Digital stuff is pretty affordable and I only need
500GB max, but I don't think they are Windows server 2003 compatible. Any
ideas?

Thanks
Mark

What are you going to use it for?

In general, Seagate, WD, and a couple other big players are good
devices, but if it's under $250 then it's most likely crap. Make sure
that it has a 5 year warranty, cheap/low quality units don't.

If you're going to do backups then you need at least 2 units, more if
you want to actually call them backups.

As long as it's USB 2.0 and the drive can be formatted to NTFS you are good
to go..
And yes, like Leythos said, Get 2

Rotate 1 week for backup offsite

As a side note, I bought a customer 5 250GB External MyBook drives about
4 months ago, they are connected to 5 servers for temp backup functions,
since we use tape in all servers. I've found at least 4 instances where
the USB External drives have gone off-line and require a power cycle to
be seen again - they also show write errors just before the disconnect.

These units are designed for PC's are they?
I wouldn't get a unit that is designed for PC's with the Auto Power thing
for a server.
(Mostly Because of the issue you had.)

however the Buffalo Units for PC's are great.
And they have the Auto Feature you can turn on/off.
(However I still don't use a PC designed USB for a server.

For Servers I get the No frills ones.
(No one touch, no auto power, basic On of power button.)

I usually by the case/Drive separate
then if the case fails I buy a new one
if the drive fails I buy a new one.

I don't like the Sealed in units..
Because of issues I've had with them.

As far as 5 years? I really don't care, in 1 year 1 Terrabyte drive is going
to be 100Bucks and I can get one of those.
Drives are a lot more reliable than they used to be.

The only thing I don't like about Seagate is that the give your a
Remanufactured drive when your RMA unit.
(I don't like that myself.)

I guess I should have added to my first post
Don't get units with auto power on/off
:)

I keep forgetting people can't read my mind. (No I'm not a woman ;)

I know a couple of infrequently used Freecom enclosures with Hitachi/IBM
drives, which run continuously between SBS reboots without problems. No
idea what the chipset is, or the motherboard chipset, but not all USB
stuff is created equal.

Thanks everyone, that's helped a lot.

Looking into it I quite like the 'look' of this 500GB version
Seagate eSATA st3500601xs
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-gb/products/external/esata_hard_drive/

Seems like a good solution??
As you probably guessed it's a backup solution for SBS in a small office,
about 10 users. Slightly difficult in predicting growth, but I'm hoping that
500GB will be ok for a while. If not we'll just have to delete all the files
we don't use and don't need!

For the SBS Customers I support, I eschew tape for USB 2.0 drives. I
use Lacie as my preferred manufacturer. I have had a few disk problems
(you have to expect it and I warn the customer about handling and life
expectancy etc). I recently found (after 4 years of this method) that
use of the same power supply causes me a problem. Rotating different
disks on the same power supply, no matter how careful I think I am,
has caused some of the power pins to snap off.

I rotate 5 250GB disks for my own servers (2) but am finding now that
I am lo

I usually backup: -

Server 1
Exchange
Full SBS
File System Incremental

Server 2
SQL 2000 dbs (2 instances)

We backup our 8 SBS servers to USB drive. One takes about an hour, the
one takes 12 hours. But they all work reliably.
