Hi,

I have SBS 2003. When I try to go into the POP3 email management, it flashes
on the screen for a millisecond and then disappears. I can't get the window
to stay on. DOes anyone know how this would happen? The emails seem to be
running fine as i have had to set them up locally. They are a small business
therefore their emails are not administered inhouse.

Thanks

Mil

Hi,

thats a strange issue...Have you tried reinstalling the pop connector?
Here I give the instructions for doing that:

Go into Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and click on Change/Remove.
Click Next until the wizard reaches the Component Selection Screen.
Select the Maintenance Action for "Server Tools", and then select the
"Reinstall" Action for Networking.
Complete the wizard.

if that not works, I´ve get another more complex intructions from a
Microsoft guy, but the first ones worked for me. The seconds ones are:

======================
In order to remove and install the POP3 Connector on SBS 2003, perform
the following:

1. Rename the POP folder to POP.old in the following location:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking

2. Using regedit, locate the "POP3 Connector" key in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Network
and export the "POP3 Connector" key to the desktop.
Delete the "POP3 Connector" key and close the registry.

3. In Windows Explorer, show hidden and system files by going to
"Tools", "Folder Options" and "Views", and unhide the hidden files, as
well as the system files.

4. search for and delete all SITxxxxx.tmp folders, you may use SIT*tmp
as a wildcard.

5. Manually execute the POP3.MSI file from SBS 2003 CD #3, in
D:\SBS\POP3. This should show the "Preparing to install" and then some
actual install progress going on.

6. Launch a new instance of Exchange System Manager, and confirm that
the "POP3 Connector Manager" is present in the Connectors section.

7. Try viewing the properties of the POP3 Connector Manager. If you
cannot, you may receive an error similar to "The POP3 Connection Manager
is only available after you install Exchange". This may be present, even
if Exchange is installed.

If you get the error from step 6, perform the following to reinstall
Exchange over itself.

1. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Select "Windows Small Business
Server 2003" and select Change/Remove. This will enter into the
Integrated Setup and the Component Selection screen. Select Networking
and Exchange Server for "reinstall".

Hi Milena,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From your description, do you mean the situation occurs when you do as
following?

1. Expand Advanced Management on Server Management.
2. Click POP3 Connector Manager and then click Open POP3 Connector Manager

If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to let me
know.

Based on my experience, it is more likely that the POP3 Connector was not
installed properly or POP3 Connector related components were not registered
properly.

In order to troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we re-register the POP3
Connector component. To do so, please run the following command in the
command prompt window:

NOTE: Please browse to C:\Program files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Networking\POP3 on command line.

"REGSVR32 popconfigsnap.dll" (without quotes).

If this issue persists, please run IMBREG.exe from C:\Program
files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking\POP3.

If these did not help, we may need to reinstall the POP3 Connector on this
server and test this issue again. To do so, please follow the steps below:

1. Rename the POP folder to POP.old in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows
Small Business Server\Networking.

2. Using regedit, locate the "POP3 Connector" key in:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Network

and export the "POP3 Connector" key to the desktop. Then, delete the "POP3

Connector" key and close the registry.

3. In Windows Explorer, show hidden and system files by going to "Tools",
"Folder Options" and "Views", and unhide the hidden files, as well as the
system files.

4. Search for and delete all SITxxxxx.tmp folders, you may use SIT*tmp as a
wildcard.
5. Manually execute the POP3.MSI file from SBS 2003 CD 3, in D:\SBS\POP3.

This should show the "Preparing to install" and then some actual install
progress going on.
6. Launch a new instance of Exchange System Manager, and confirm that the
"POP3 Connector Manager" is present in the Connectors section.
7. Try viewing the properties of the POP3 Connector Manager. If you cannot,
you may receive an error similar to "The POP3 Connection Manager is only
available after you install Exchange". This may be present, even if
Exchange is installed.

If you get the error from step 7, perform the following to reinstall
Exchange over itself.

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Open Add or Remove Programs.
3. Select "Windows Small Business Server 2003" and click Change/Remove.
4. This will enter into the Integrated Setup and the Component Selection
screen.
5. Select Networking and Exchange Server for "reinstall".

Note: Before you reinstall Exchange, you may want to backup user mailboxes.
You can backup the emails in the specific mailbox either by using exporting
to a PST or using the Exmerge.

convenience.

Hi

I have exactly the same issue and have tried everything you have suggested
but still cannot resolve this issue and install the connector correctly. The
connector shows in Exchange manager but when you select properties either
directly from EXchange manager or from Server Manager the screen flashes
before you and then disappears. It appears that the POP3 connector is not
installed correctly but even using your manual instructions I cannot get it
to run.

When running the install wizard for networking components it fails and says
"an error occured while configuring the Microsoft connector for POP3
mailboxes See c:\program files\Microsoft integration\Windows Small business
server2003\logs\setup.log for details)

This log basically says nothing except "rerun setup and try the installation
again". I have noticed that on my installation that the POP3 directory is not
created in c:\progrma files\microsoft small business server\networking\pop3
but at the root of D: drive instead. This maybe due to me selecting to
install the Exchange MDBdata on the d drive of my server but not sure. Any
further help would be much appreciated this is driving me up the wall! This
is a fresh server SBS2003 using the media which includes SP1.

Thanks

Hi Oliver,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Is there any third-party software such as anti-virus software installed on
the SBS 2003 server? Please try a clean boot to see what the result is:

1. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
2. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.
3. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.
4. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.
5. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
6. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

Hope the information help and I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Hi Crina,

Yes we do have virus software installed Sophos Small business suite
including Pure message. I tried what you said disabling the non microsoft
services from within MSCONFIG but unfotunately I get the same error :

"an error occured while configuring the Microsoft connector for POP3
> | mailboxes See c:\program files\Microsoft integration\Windows Small
> business
> | server2003\logs\setup.log for details)

Again the log simply repeates the message and says to try re installing the
pop3 connector. The pop3 connector acts in the same way ie it is ther but
when you go into properties page it flashes up and then disappears.

Again thanks for your help - any further help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Crina

Unfortunately as I am on a customer site I have had to take pro active
action to resolve this issue and have done so by rebuilding the server from
scratch! Long winded but it is working now so there must have been some kind
of corruption with the original install. I took note of your comments and
made sure the pop3 connector was fully functional before installing any 3rd
party componets such as Sophos anti virus, puremessage and backup exec.

Thanks again - shame we couldnt find a solution to help others as Im sure it
was something simple but never mind - its working now.

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for your updating!

I am glad to hear the problem is resolved. Because the problem has been
solved by rebuilding the server, we may not be able to find the root cause.
I think it should be caused by the corruption of component or system.

It is my pleasure to work with you in this post. If you encounter any
difficulties in the future, please submit the post to the newsgroup. We
are glad to be of the assistance.

Again, thank you for using Microsoft newsgroup. Have a nice day. :)
