I am running SBS 2003 Standard with SP1 that was recently restored from a
disaster. Every 85 seconds I receive four the following events in the System
log. This started after I removed an old version of the APC PowerChute UPS
software. I had removed it because the server was running fine using the
native UPS support. With the software removed, the native UPS support tab
was not visible in the Power Options Applet of the control panel. I have
since downloaded and installed the latest version of APC PowerChute Business
Edition (7.04) which appears to be working OK, but I keep receiving these
events. I am certain that is has something to do with the Native UPS
support being corrupt but don't know how to repair it.
Suggestions please??
Thanks!

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: PlugPlayManager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 257
Date: 10/24/2005
Time: 10:29:51 AM
User: N/A
Computer: HAL
Description:
Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of
"C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE"
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Thank you for using SBS newsgroup!
For your description, I understand that the server box always gets 257
warning event. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Technical speaking, the event may be logged when both of the following
conditions are true:
*A high volume of disk I/O operations are performed.
*A time-out occurs during the interaction between Logical Disk Manager
(LDM) and Plug and Play (PNP).
These messages are only informational and can be safely ignored.
For more detail information, you can refer to the following KB article:
Event IDs 257, 12, and 51 are logged on a Windows Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=835473
Have you installed McAfee VirusScan on the server box? If yes, please check
the KB 836788 article to try to resolve the issue:
Event ID 257 is logged when you use the Volume Shadow Copy service and
McAfee VirusScan to back up data in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=836788
To the UPS tab missing issue, based on my research, the issue is caused by
failing to uninstalling APC software. you can refer to the following steps
to uninstall APC software and bring back the UPS tab.
1. Uninstall APC Powershute from Add/Remove Programs.
2. If the UPS tab is still not there, please add the registry below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPS
Value Name: ShowUPSTab
Data Type : REG_DWORD
Data: 1 to show UPS tab, 0 to hide the UPS tab
Try to see if the UPS tab appears.
What is more, you can try to uninstall the APC software to see if the 257
event disappears.
I appreciate your time and efforts to perform test. I am happy to be
assistance of you and looking forward to your reply!
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

I was able to uninstall PowerChute Business edition and apply your registry
setting suggestion below and the UPS tab appeared. This helps, but I am now
receiving the 257 is two groups of 6 messages every minute! That's 12
messages a minute. Since the UPS is now attached via USB port, I tried
removing all USB ports and reinstalling them, but this didn't help. There
are only 3 users connected to the server doing a minimum amount of work.
I do not have McAfee installed. The server does a Shadow backup at 11:00 PM
on Wednesdays and Fridays which only takes about an hour. I do use disk
mirroring with the Windows server 2003 disk manager. The processor is a
3.2GB Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM in an HP ML310 box.
Thanks,
Bs.

Thanks for your update!
For you now scenario, I suggest you reboot the server to see if the warning
disappears. The issue should be related to a time-out issue that occurs
during the interaction between Logical Disk Manager (LDM) and Plug and Play
(PNP).
Please check if the Plug and Play service and the Logical Disk Manager
service running properly and set the Startup type as Automatic.
Try to test, how about the result?
If the issue persists, could you find any other error event in the event
viewer? If yes, please tell me the detail information.
I appreciate your time and efforts!
Have a nice day!

I fixed the problem. I noticed another warning about the serial port that
occurrec when this problem started happening. I went to the Registry and saw
that there was only \Device\Serial1 REG_SZ COM1 in the
local_Machine\Hardware\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM key. I deleted this key
(\Device\Serial1) and went to Add Hardware. This found two serial ports and
entered the keys into the registry. I then rebooted the machine and no
longer get the messages.
I think this had to do with the fact that the old UPS was attached to the
serial port and when I removed the software for it the port somehow got
corrupted in the registry.
All is well now. Many thanks for your assistance!

Thanks for your update. I am glad to know that things are getting fine now.
I appreciate your time and effort to the issue and get this resolved. I
also researched many cases and found that the APC Powershute software
indeed has the bug and it often can not be deleted entirely. Many thanks
for your knowledge sharing with us!
Please feel free to post back when you need further assistance on this
issue and you are always welcome!
Have a nice day!
