I am trying to run windows update and a brand new install of SBS 2003.
I was trying to add the update sites to my Trusted site list, but no
matter what I try to add, I get an invalid wildcard error. I get the
error even when I don't have any wildcards in the address.

On a lark, I tried to add local sites to the local tab and even some
to the deny tab, always the same error, you have entered an invalid
wildcard sequence.

What gives? Any ideas.

This is on a brand new HP Proliant server. It has 4 GB of ram and
plenty of room on the hard drive.

PS: I also can't get WSUS to load. It installed okay, but when I'm in
the sever management console, the screen says "Loading", but never
actually does. I think the problems are related, but I'm currently
stuck on the first. Please help...

Did you uninstall Internet Explorer Enhanced Security? I do that ASAP after
installing a new server.

Best to ask this as a separate post, as it is probably not related.

No. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that now.

SP1, I believe, I'm not on site at the moment, but the package we
bought was SBS 2003 R2...

I had an install of Windows 2003 Standard R2 exhibiting the same behavior on
a new HP DL360 G5. I found the source of the problem on my end was a missing
registry key. Microsoft KB259493
references removing invalid entries from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/internetsettings/ZoneMap.

On my server, the local administrator account didn't have the "ZoneMap" key
so I added it and left it empty. Restarted IE and then I could add trusted
sites.

Hope this works for you too.

That was it. Thanks.

PS: It also fixed my WSUS issue with the page not loading...
