My customer's current environment already has Exchange 2007 installed
on a member server w/ WS03 R2 Std. Ed. which I found somewhat
surprising.
The current SBS Server has IE 7 & SP2 installed which raised some red
flags for me once I discovered the following kb articles.
kb 932442 (IE 7 reference)
kb 932600 (SP2 reference)
As a precaution should I uninstall both IE 7 & SP2 before running the
transition tool?
Also, as a precaution is it a good idea to backup & remove the Small
Business registry hive?
kb 914990 (Small Business RegKey)
Thank you for any feedback on these or other issues to be concerned
with.
Overall my plan was to:
1. Install the transition pack on the SBS Server
2. Stand up a WS03 SP2 server image in a VM
3. Follow steps outlined in kb 555549
4. Rebuild the original SBS Server with WS03 Standard Edition and bring
it back into the domain as a DC, seize back the FSMO roles and keep the
VM online for continuity.
One last question... the SBS server will be at SP1 level & the WS03
server will be at SP2 level based on the plan above. Should I re-apply
SP2 to the SBS server before trying to make the WS03 server a domain
controler, global catalog & FSMO owner? Or go the other way & put the
WS03 server at SP1?

Before you run the Transition Pack there are a few steps you should take to
ensure a smooth transition:
1.) Do a thorough, complete, VERIFIED backup. If it isn't verified and
tested, it isn't a backup, IMHO.
2.) Clean up your HD. Remove temporary files, old logs, and so forth. Run
Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe)
3.) Defragment the HD. Use the built in, or use a good third party such as
PerfectDisk from Raxco.
4.) Disconnect the server from the internet completely. (Easiest way is just
unplug the network from the back of the server.)
5.) Stop any third party services that are running as a system account and
set them to disabled or uninstall them. This includes AV, disk utilities,
and any real-time monitoring programs.
6.) Remove Veritas BackupExec (see KB: 914990)
7.) Run regedit and check for the presence of the key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Small Business. If it exists, remove it.
That's it. Just make sure you have the matching TP version to your SBS
version. (ie, SP1 for SP1 SBS, etc.)
Also, make sure you have media kits available for your individual server
software packages. You shouldn't need them, but it's good to have, just in
case.
Finally, just run the transition. Expect it to take 2+ hours, and 7 or more
reboots. Even if you give it the logon password, you may get prompted the
first reboot - I did in 4 of 7 transitions I did last spring. No discernable
pattern to it. Once that first one completes, though, you can go grab some
lunch/dinner/whatever and it should run by itself.

Hello Kuchar,
Thanks for your post and Charlie's sharing.
I agree with Charlie that please pay attention to the service pack versions which should match. Please make note of any service packs you have installed on your operating
system. You must reinstall them after the migration. In addition, you may refer to the following article for more information on Transition Pack:
