I have a SBS 2008 premium installed on a VMWare ESXi server. We are looking
to get the backups to tape as well as disk for this server, and right now i
am doing backups with the internal windows backup software to a internal
extra harddrive. The disk that is being used is formatted and handled of the
backup software and this also means i do not actually have access to the disk
as a logical drive for example. So i want to copy theese files to tape (on
another backup server) and would like to get access to the backup files, how
can i do this? is there a way of sharing the backupdisk or something that
allows me access to theese files? or how is it possible to transfer any
backups to tape?
Best Regards

Thanks for your post.
I am sorry to say installing SBS 2008 premium on a VMWare ESXi server is not officially supported by Microsoft in this SBS Newsgroup. So currently, I don't have appropriate
document to recommend you. Let's see if other experts here have similar experience and would like to help.

On the other hand, have you consider using the built-in Hyper-V feature in SBS 2008? Here are some related documents just for your reference:

However, I've not yet had the time and available drive to restore that
backup and determine whether or not the restored drive can be successfully
used to restore files from the backup.
So--some software can successfully read the files off the backup drive--but
I've no idea whether the software associated with your tape backup can do
this.
And, in my case, this is a physical server--no virtualization involved,
which adds a layer of complexity.
If the drive you were using were an external drive, it could be disconnected
and connected to another machine, which might make the backup process easier
to manage. That might be something to try out to test whether you could
back up the data to tape.

Thanks for the replies, ok so if its not a supported solution from MS then
Im on my own here, hyper-V is an alternative, but we have already deployed
the server in VMWare so i had hope to find a soution in this somewhere...
Its an internal drive as ESX server does not support external USB/ESATA/FW
drives, its just ISCSI drives (and maybe something more) that is "external"
in that solution unfortunately...
But its good to know that there ARE programs reading this disk at least! We
run Backup Exec as tape software... so maybe some way of getting the files
off there, there is...
