Cable Modem > Watchguard Firebox > Switch > Server / Clients
Not sure what is going on exactly but we lost our internet
connection today but LAN connections were fine. I power
cycled our modem, rebooted the server, power cycled the
watchguard, called the ISP (working fine from their point
of view).
The SBS box says (via the system tray) a network cable
(internet) is unplugged so I unplugged/replugged all ends
of cables from the modem, watchguard, and SBS box.
No dice. Before I left the office the previous unplugged
cable report (big red "x") cleared up for the internet but
is now being displayed on the LAN connection. Still no
internet connection, and now no LAN connection.
Any ideas/advice on how to trouble shoot this problem?
Unless I get this solved it'll be difficult for me to check on
this thread during the day tomorrow (posting from home).

Also, run the SBS BPA and fix *everything* it finds.

I verified the preferred and alternate DNS entires and
they match what I have on record from our ISP. I did
notice (going from memory) the IP of the router/firewall
device (displayed at the bottom of the same page as the
DNS info) was listed as 192.168.16.1. To access the
control page for the watchguard I use 192.168.1.1

I have seen cases where a NIC would become inop for Internet until the the
machine was shutdown, UNPLUGGED FROM POWER for a full minute or so and then
re-plugged in and restarted. Might be worth a try. Two machines I've found
this on so far. Both were hp desktops using built-in MB NICs...

Critical issues
Task Offloading is enabled and should be disabled on Windows Small Business
Server 2003. Change the value of the DisableTaskOffload registry key to 1.
For detailed instructions, see the Knowledge Base article "You experience
intermittent communication failure between computers that are running
Windows XP or Windows Server 2003" at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=95149. If the DisableTaskOffload
registry key does not exist, then manually create this registry key and set
its value to 1
I was unable to do the above since I do not know where this key belongs
and I do not have a net connection to follow the kb article.
EDNS is enabled on this server. Some of the routers or firewalls may not
support EDNS. You should disable EDNS on this server. To do so, click
Start, and then click Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt window, type
dnscmd /Config /EnableEdnsProbes 0 and then restart the DNS Server service.
Completed the above
There were some other issues listed but nothing critical.
All of which required a KB article and since I did not
have a connection it was impossible for me to refer to
said articles. I did save the report if anyone wishes to
see it. Although I'm unsure if I can post an xml file here.
Rebooted
Ran the CEICW and selected the following options
+ Broadband
+ A Local router with an IP address
+ Left preferred and alternate DNS as is
+ Local IP of router is 192.168.16.1 (left as is)
+ My server uses an single network connection for both net and lan is
UNchecked
+ ISP connection is set to Internet Connection (192.168.1.5)
+ Local Network connection is set to Local Lan Connection (192.168.1.3)
+ Subnet mask on both of the above are 255.255.255.0
+ Disable firewall
+ Enable internet email
+ Use DNS to route email
+ Use the Microsoft connector for POP3 Mailboxes is UNchecked
+ Use Exchange is checked
+ Email is delivered directly to my server
+ email domain name is atreng.com
+ Enable exchange to remove email attachements that have the following
extentions

I remove the cable from NIC1 and placed in NIC2. Now the
"red x" changed to the "Internet connection" from the "Local LAN".
I set the default gateway of the TCP/IP on the "Local LAN" to 1.1
and it all works.
I'm not sure why this was setup the way is was (I didn't set it up)
but I'm happy for now since we are back to functional. I'm not
entirely satisfied since I do not understand why but I'll save that
for another day.

Make sure you also disable the unused NIC (in Network Connections window),
otherwise it will still register into DNS using the APIPA number, meaning
169.254.x.x, which will cause issues with workstations and possibly the DC
too.

Forgive me for being unsure of how to accomplish that but I assume
you mean under the dnsmgmt console. Expanding each node I do not
see any such entries in the right pane.
Yes, that's the place. Using the DNS console, expand and check each
individual record entry. If you see one, delete it. If you don't, that's a
good thing. Also check the Nameserver tab when you right click on the zone
itself and choose properties.

Only one entry on the Nameserver tab and it's the IP of the server.
