Hi All,
I am having troubles with backup on a SBS 2003 system and its starting to
drive me insane. The story of it goes as below.

First NTBACKUP.EXE causes a BSOD, so we apply SP1 to fix it.
The server wont talk to the tape drive via the internal SCSI, so we have to
purchase a card.
NOW Volume Shadow Services wont run and therefore the backups wont run.

I am not new to IT but this is the most trouble I have ever experienced with
a server backup. I would have thought buying all IBM stuff and being a new
build it would go smooth as.

Anyways, this time when we run a backup, it stops at Preparing to backup
using shadow copy. This fails and the below is in the log:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: 4mm DDS
Media name: "Media created 22/07/2005 at 15:41"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

We also get errors:
ID 8194 about unexpected error querying IVssWriter Callback Interface 8007000e
ID 12302 inconsistency contacting shadow copy service writers

I have run the vssadmin list writers command, but it lists nothing at all..
I dont know if thats a good or bad thing.

Anyways, I have been trying to solve this for a while now but cant find
anything that sounds promising.

If anyone can suggest anything to fix this I would appreciate your input.

Cheers

Hello Luke,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you have issue on SBS Backup. If I have misunderstood
your concern, please let me know.

Before we start to troubleshooting, I need to confirm one thing with you,
as you mentioned "we apply SP1 to fix it", I need to know what exact SP1 it
is, Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SBS 2K3 Server SP1?

Based on my research, this issue can be caused by varies of factors. Please
understand that you may need to be asked to contact our PSS for live debug
if it is necessary. Please take your time and perform the following steps:

1. On the server, run "services.msc", make sure that the Microsoft Software
Shadow Copy Provider Service is started.

2. From this error information you have applied, the most possible cause is
the VSS files are not correctly registered or there is incorrectly register
keys. Please refer to the following steps:

Please open a command window and execute the following commands

Cd /d %windir%\system32
Regsvr32 ole32.dll
Regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
Regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
Regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

Then, please check the following registry key:

a. Start -> Run "regedit" (without quotation marks)

b. Expand to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup.

c. Check SystemSetupInProgress: REG_DWORD. The Value should be 0.

Restarted the server and check whether the issue has been fixed.

3. If the issue persists, please perform Clean Boot on the server. To do
so,

a. Click Start->Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
"Startup" tab.

c. Click to clear all the check marks from the list box under "Startup".

d. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and
then click the "Disable All" button to disable the non-Microsoft services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue still exists.

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

4. If the issue still persists, please help to gather more detail
information for further research:

a. Have you successfully installed SP1 on the server?

b. Run the following command in a command window, and paste the exact full
content to the Newsgroup. Please do not customize the output.

vssadmin list writers

c. Backup Log:

1) The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.

2) The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.

I am appreciated your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please
feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Hi Brandy,
Thanks for your response to my troubles. The main thing I would like to find
out now is can i safely disable VSS on the C: drive and get some sort of
backup running, since we have nothing to fall back on should anything go
wrong with the procedures below???

In regards to what you have asked:

* I have only installed Windows Server 2003 SP1 at this stage. I realise
there are a few other things that need to be installed before I can install
SP1 for SBS2003, but really want to get a few good backups before proceeding.

* The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service is set to manual
startup. I have not changed this so I assume its the default setting.

*I ran the commands you mentioned to register the files and so forth, also
checked the registry key, which was already set to 0. The problem still
exists after registering the files

* I have not disabled the mentioned services, but there is nothing unusual
about this system compared to the 3 or 4 other SBS2K3 servers I have setup.
They are related to NortonAV, PCAnywhere, Intel Alert Handler and PDS, and
IBM Active PCI alert service. We are not running anything fancy on the server.

* The output of the list writers command below:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>vssadmin list writers
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

* Output of the most recent backup attempt log:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: 4mm DDS

Media name: "Media created 10/08/2005 at 15:34"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

----------------------

* I could not find the last file you were referring to

Please let me know if there is any other information needed, but right now,
I need to find out if it is safe to disable the VSS on C: drive (through
properties of C: in my computer) to attempt to get some backups happening.

This server is now live and therefore we need to backup ASAP.

Thanks again for your help with this matter.

VSS is heavily dependent on the SCSI driver. I found I needed an updated
Adaptec driver to clear my VSS crashing.

Hi Steve,
I took your advice and updated the Adaptec SCSI drivers for the 29160LP we
are running the tape drive off.

Now when we run a backup, it still doesn't work, and the backup log is the
same (error 0xffffffff) but there are only 3 x Event ID 12302 appearing in
the event log, so there are less errors then before.

I havent rebooted the server since installing the new drivers so mabey I
need to do that first (after hours).

Thanks for your help and hopefully I can get this sorted.

Hello Luke,

Thank you for posting back and your information!

From your reply, you mentioned "I have only installed Windows Server 2003
SP1 at this stage". We do not recommend that customers install Windows
Server 2003 SP1 on SBS 2K3, even though it is supported on Windows Small
Business Server 2003, but there are some known integration issues. Please
see:

Known issues that may occur if you install Windows Server 2003 SP1 on
Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;897342

So my suggestions are:

1. Remove Windows Server 2003 SP1 and test the issue again.

2. Perform clean boot and see whether this issue is caused by third party
software. The steps are listed in my last reply.

3. Actually, we do not consider this is a VSS issue, but you still can
safely disable it. If you are running the Backup Wizard, it will use its
own VSS writer to backup the open files real time, and you cannot disable
it. So you only can disable VSS from NTBackup. Disabling VSS will result in
some open files will not be backup. You also can use the command to disable
VSS. Please see:

Switch: /SNAP:{on | off}
Description: Specifies whether the backup must use a volume shadow copy.

Server 2003

Hi Brandy,
1. I am told that you MUST install Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a SBS2K3
system before you can install SBS2K3 SP1 as per
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b6f8a4c0-b707-4161-adeb-44f1b756119f&displaylang=en
It states that Windows 2003 Server SP1 must be installed prior to installing
SP1 for SBS2K3, along with a few other patches that it also lists on that
page.
As for removing SP1 from the system, this is not possible. The whole reason
for installing the service pack in the first place was because running
NTBACKUP.EXE previously caused the system to blue screen, leaving us without
a backup solution yet again. An issue that was mentioned as a problem fixed
by Windows Server 2003 SP1.
We installed the SP1 for Windows Server 2003 so we could get backups running
and thereby backup the system, to continue patching as recommended, but now
we cant even do this.
Furthermore, I would hate to try and do something as drastic as removing SP1
without a single backup of the system.

2. Performing a clean boot as you mentioned (disabling all non MS services)
did not improve the situation (still stops at the preparing to backup using
shadow copy).

3. I did actually use the SNAP switch in NTBackup, I found this
documentation on Thursday and tried it. However even with the SNAP switch set
as OFF and running the scheduled task, NTBACKUP does not display the NTBACKUP
interface, but the event log still gets the same VSS errors as mentioned in
my previous posts.. still no backup occurs.

In my previous post I was a little unclear about what I meant.
When I right click on the C:\ drive, there is a tab about 'Shadow Copies'
which is enabled. My thinking was that if I disable this feature, then
perhaps NTBackup will at least run to backup some of the data on the server.
I wanted to clarify that disabling THIS (shadow copies on C:\) option would
not effect the server in any way (such as overwriting new files with old
ones, etc..) and whether it was likely to help the situation we are currently
facing?

Please forgive me if I seem a little frustrated, but as you can probably
understand, problems like this can be very irritating especially when it is
not possible to reboot the server during the day, etc..

Thank you for your help so far, and hopefully we can come to a solution
quickly (even if it just means disabling shadow copies on the drives).

Regards,
Luke

Hello Luke,

Thank you for posting back!

I am sorry that I did not explain clearly in my last reply. We do not
suggest customers Only install Windows Server 2003 SP1 on their server. If
they do only install the Windows Server 2003 SP1, either remove it or keep
on installing the remaining patches Small Business Server 2K3 SP1 on their
server. For your case, you mentioned "I have only installed Windows Server
2003 SP1 at this stage", I suggest you that install the whole patches in
SBS 2K3 SP1 and see whether this issue will occurs.

As you mentioned that you only installed Windows Server 2003 SP1 so far, I
am not sure whether you have any concerns on installing the SBS 2K3 SP1. If
yes, please feel free to let me know.

For detailed instructions for installing SBS 2003 SP1, please refer to the
following SBS 2003 SP1 download page (please read it carefully):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B6F8A4C0-B707-4161-

To order SBS 2003 SP1, please contact the phone shown in the following
webpage.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/downloads/sp1/phone.mspx

If you need the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium SP1 which
includes ISA 2004/SQL SP4, you need to order it.

I understand that this is an urgent issue, a suggestion would be to contact
Microsoft Product Support Services via telephone for the quickest solution,
and a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. Please
be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

Here, I am still glad to assist on your issue. Please see:

For Shared Copy, as I mentioned in the previous reply, we do not suggest
customer disable VSS in case when you performing NTBackup, some open files
will not be backed up and cause some unexpected issue.

If you really want to disable it, please see:

[Note]: The Shadow Copied tab in C drive Properties is different from the
Volume Shadow Copy in NTBackup.

a. Go to Start -> Run "ntbackup" (without quotation marks). Click Advanced
Mode.

b. On the Welcome tab, click Backup Wizard (Advanced). Run the Backup
Wizard.

c. Proceed to the Completing the Backup Wizard page, click Advanced.

d. Proceed to the How to Back Up page, check the box Disable Volume Shadow
Copy.

e. Finish rest of the wizard.

I suggest that run following command from a command prompt and send the
full result to the Newsgroup, so we can verify whether the registry keys
are valid.

REG.EXE QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlset\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs /s

I am appreciated your time and cooperation, and looking forward to hearing

Hi Brandy,
Thanks again for your time and patience with this issue.
Yes, I am concerned with installing the rest of the SP for SBS2K3 simply
because if anything were to happen to the server we would have absolutley no
fallback method since there has not been a single sucessful backup of
anything on the server.

As for disabling volume shadow copy in NTBACKUP advanced tab, for some
reason this box is greyed out. Even if I only select to backup a simple
folder of documents, etcc (eg. not selecting system state or exchange,
etc..), the disable volume shadow copy tickbox is greyed out, and therefore
cannot be changed.

I ran the command which you specified and the output is pasted below:

Hello Luke,

Thank you for posting back!

I have checked the registry keys you applied with mine on the test machine,
they are exact the same.

From your reply, I understand that you do not have a Backup for your SBS
2K3 server currently, also, I understand that it is better to have a backup
before we installing SBS 2K3 SP1. In this case, I suggest you that contact
Microsoft Product Support Services via telephone so that a dedicated
Support Professional can assist with your request. For your case, I think
maybe hey will help you to perform an offline backup for your server or any
other better options. Please be advised that contacting phone support will
be a charged call.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

Hi Brandy,
Do you think this hotfix for VSS will help, specifically:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167#XSLTH4135121121120121120120

It mentions something of backup timesouts, or similar. Is there a newer
hotfix or something else we should apply to try before contacting PSS?

I did call and ask for this hotfix, but they have not yet sent it to me. Are
there any risks associated with installing this hotfix?

Thanks again for your help and I guess if necessary we will have to call
PSS, but I would still prefer to have proper tape backups before continuing
with the SP install.

Cheers,
Luke

Hi Brandy,
one more thing I would like to add.

If i run ntbackup on the server to backup the servers local disk c:\ the
backup program stops backing up at the 'preparing to backup using shadow
copy'.
This part we know.

BUT on the same server, If i go to backup files located on a NETWORK drive,
the backup runs to completion without a problem.

To me this suggest a problem with the Volume Shadow Service and the Shadow
Copies kept on C: drive.

One option that I now have is to use NTBackup on a PC, which backs the
server up across the network (for all the important files and hopefully I can
get exchange to do this as well from the PC) then backup the bkf file from
the server onto tape.

I cant do system state this way (or can I?) and backup/restore will take
longer, but at least the data will finally be getting backed up. To restore,
we will just have to restore the whole bkf file from tape to disk, then use
ntbackup to get the files out of there that we want.

For now this is a workable solution until we get the server working properly.

Please let me know if you have any info on either system state across the
network, or some other more effective way to do this.

Regards,
Luke

Hello Luke,

Thank you for posting back!

At this stage, we cannot determine whether this hotfix can be applied, as
we do not have a conclusion whether this issue is caused by VSS or Windows
Server 2003 SP1.

I still strongly suggest you that contact our PSS immediately before thing
is getting worse and worse. As I mentioned in the previous reply, you
cannot remove the Windows Server 2003 SP1, but you do not have a backup in
the tape either.

If you want to continue installing the rest patches in SBS 2K3 SP1, you
need to have a full backup first. PSS will help you to have an offline
backup for your server. They also will help you troubleshoot your current
Backup issue.

I am appreciated your time and understanding!

Hello John,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you have a same issue as Luke. Please see my suggestions:

1. Have you tried my previous suggestions and steps? I suggest you that
perform the steps in my previous reply first.

2. What is the exact SP1 you have installed, Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SBS
2K3 SP1?

3. If you backup to a local drive, will this issue occur?

Thanks for your time, and I am looking forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

I followed all the steps

> 2. What is the exact SP1 you have installed, Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SBS
> 2K3 SP1?

SBS 2K3 SP1 5.2.3790

> 3. If you backup to a local drive, will this issue occur?

I tried on local drive and usb drive, both the same problem

Also did this:

Resolution
==========
In most cases, re-registering the VSS binaries resolves the issue. To
re-register
VSS binaries and services, first stop the *Volume* *Shadow* *Copy*
Service:

Open a command prompt and change directories to \windows\system32 (this
is
important when you begin registering the dlls):
net stop vss
Then register the following dlls and services (be sure you're still in
the
windows\system32 directory at your command prompt):

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
rRegsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Any idea's ? It drives me crazy, and we centainly need a backup now

Regards,

John

Hello Everyone

I also have a very similar problem with sms 2003 and backups.

I've been a msce for over 8 years and i've never encounter such a weird
problem as this. It's driving me bloody nuts. I'm hoping i might get some
help to what i could try next here. :)

Ok i'll explain what my problem is and what i've done so far to try and fix
it.
This may be a little confusing but i'll try my best to explain what i've
done over about 10 days so far.

Problem started with my customer having no tape backup system on their sbs
2003 server.
The system config was.
Pentium 4, 3.0
2 gig ram
epox mob
Primise Fastrack Tx2200 raid card
2 x 160 gig drives mirrored
I bought a Sony SDX-460V IDE backup device. Installed the device.
Tried to do a backup and i get the "Preparing to backup using shadow
copying...."
Sits here for about 5 minutes
As soon as it comes up in the backup i get 3 event messages saying

ok now that is over with here is when it starts getting interesting.

I reinstalled Windows 2003 SP1 and SBS 2003 SP1
Still same problem.

Removed the mirror
Still same problem.

Removed the Promise card and plugged hard drive into on board sata.
Still same problem.

At this point i'm thinking must be something wrong the hard drive config.
I went into Computer Manager and selected Disk Management and i get a error.
Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager server
Popup of "Unspecified error"

At this point i'm thinks a mob problem or hard drive problem. So i grabbed
the other hard drive that had the mirror on it. Took it back to my office
and plugged it into another server that was the same config as above.

And it worked. Backup worked, no errors. Disk Management worked everything
was fine.

So in my mind this confirmed a hard ware problem on the other server.

So now because these 2 server were not mine and i wasn't very happy with
their config anyhow. I ghosted the mirror onto a completely different server.
Pentium 4 3.0
1 ddr2 ram
3 80gig sata hard drive (1 os, 2 mirrored with data)
Sony SDX-460v ide tape drive

Reinstalled some device drivers and got SBS 2003 working on this new server
with the old image.

Tested the tape drive and disk management and it worked fine. Very good in
fact.
All confident i've fix the problem i've taken this server back to my
customer, installed the server. Copied all data from the other server onto
the new server.

Tried the run a backup and the problem is back. Exactly the same problem
down to ever little error. At this point i was considering jumping of the
roof of their building.

I've taken the other server that had the original problem back to the office
plugged it in and tested it.

To my amazement the bloody thing was working. Not a single error. WHAT THE
??
This is the server that not 1 hour ago at my customers office wasn't
working. No backup and no disk management ???

So now i'm thinking it's a peripherals problem. ie Keyboard, mouse, power
cable, network cable something that i'm plugging into the server at my
customers location.

I changed over the keyboard, mouse, network cable, power cable, but still
the same bloody errors. aaahhhhh

Now i'm here hoping someone out there might know what is going on. Because
i now have no idea what to do next.

The only thing left is change in the switch\fw\vpn box that the server is
plugged into. But surely it's got nothing to do with that.
Also there is a NT domain box sitting on the same network on a different
domain.

So in short, i don;t think there is anything wrong with the server hardware
or software because the server that was having the problem worked fine in
another location.

Please i'm after any sugestions.

Regards,
Scott

Hello John,

Thank you for posting back!

I am sorry to hear that the previous steps did not work.

I suggest that disable the VSS function temporary and use NTbackup to have
a backup first. To do so, please see:

Copy.

e. Finish rest of the wizard.

f. Run Ntbackup.
